Ian Watkins (Lost Prophets) pays for protection after prison stabbing incident according to inmate
Ian Watkins, the former frontman of the Welsh band Lostprophets, is reportedly shelling out cash for protection after an incident involving drugs and an unauthorized cell phone, resulting in his stabbing with a makeshift weapon at HMP Wakefield, dubbed the "Monster Mansion".
According to interviews for the book "Inside Wakefield Prison: Life Behind Bars in the Monster Mansion", inmates at the prison, known for rough handling of certain types of offenders, are said to make use of Watkins' access to funds for his safety and protection. This situation arose after Watkins was reportedly stabbed in relation to a drug debt issue within the prison walls.
A prisoner revealed to the authors:
He is hated by many, but as HMP W is mixed, i.e. VPs and high-level gangsters, drug importers and organised crime, they just take money off him (Watkins) for his safety.
He has spent thousands on protection. The recent stabbing was a reminder that he needs to pay. He took an amount of spice off a prisoner with a prison value of £150.
Because it was Watkins, he was told he owed £900. He was high and refused to pay; therefore, he was stabbed in the side using a sharpened toilet brush.
A prisoner, who described Watkins as a "tall thin male who dyes his thinning hair black" with dye bought from the prison service, told interviewers Watkins was caught with a phone.
The source explained:
He had paid a Liverpool gang member £1,000 to use the phone, and when he got caught with it, he had to pay £5,000. This is fact; I know the guy who lent him the phone. Watkins is on C wing at HMP W.
His work activity is education. He buys his protection, and his recent stabbing was due to a drugs debt. He is considered vile amongst other offenders (because of his involvement in sexual offences against babies). He pays for protection.
The disgraced singer was sent to prison in December of 2013 for a number of child sex offenses, attempted rape of a baby. Watkins is set to spend 29 years in prison plus an additional six years on probation following that. Despite his criminal history reports indicate Watkins continues to maintain a following and still receives considerable correspondence from female admirers.
Watkins may be up for parole in 2031, but his release depends on a number of factors, including if he is involved in any incidents between now and then.
