Slipknot to release 25th anniversary edition of the band's self-titled album
During the late '90s and early '00s, Roadrunner Records was infamous for milking their roster's successful albums with constant re-releases and deluxe editions. Slipknot's groundbreaking 1999 self-titled debut was no exception, falling victim to the label's marketing tactics. The first reissue of the album even had to dial back its tracklist due to a copyright dispute involving the tracks "Frail Limb Nursery" and "Purity."
Over the years, the album has seen numerous expanded reissues, digipaks, and a 10th-anniversary edition, each packed with bonus material. Now, with the 25th anniversary of the double-platinum release having passed on June 29th, Slipknot is digging even deeper for their upcoming reissue to mark the occasion.
Slipknot percussionist M. Shawn "Clown" Crahan has taken the lead on pulling rare and unreleased content from the vault for what could be the definitive version of the iconic record. In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, Crahan teased what's in store for this special re-release.
Crahan shared the following:
I'm fully involved with putting together a reissue package, because I'm the band caretaker. I'm the one that held everything over the years: all the DAT tapes from the [sound]board from all our first shows, all the videotapes from studio sessions at SR Audio and Indigo Ranch, different test mixes that we gave to other people that we said 'No' to at that time and that were never released, but are amazing.
They would never have been listened to 25 years ago, but now that the golden egg has been laid, and everyone knows it, you're not going to listen to another mix and go, 'This is better', you're just gonna go, 'Wow, this is Slipknot like this, 25 years ago.'
There's new artwork, new photos from the time, there's so much music that's so punk rock from board tapes, there's video documents, there's a lot – audio, visuals, everything. It's the best of all things Slipknot.
