I listen to more music than you

Remember that stupid "win an Ipod" shit from earlier this year that everyone was trying? Well, for some reason I wasted about an hour attempting to succeed at this. I failed. However, there was one redeeming component to the experience - I discovered Real Rhapsody.

For those who haven't heard, Real Rhapsody (I have the unlimited plan) is a piece of software that resides on your computer and facilitates streaming access to millions of songs via your Internet connection. You can find Pink Floyd's entire catalog, Public Enemy's stuff, Dido, Converge, Lamb Of God, Explosions In The Sky, Queen, Ben Folds, Jack Johnson... whatever your little fucking heart desires. You get all of this for just $9.99 a month... less than the price of one lousy CD. You do have to pay extra if you want to burn stuff to CD, but I don't bother, since I'm online all fucking day. CDs are just a hassle to me. Now I know some of you are asking the following: "why should I pay for music when I get it for free via Soulseek, etc.?" This is a valid point. For me personally though, I don't want to deal with finding shit, queuing it up, arranging it into albums, and storing it on my computer. It's way to much work. With Rhapsody, I just type in a band name, and get all of the group's available material, including a mini-bio, album covers, track titles, and similar recommendations. I can construct playlists, bookmark bands, listen to online radio stations... the list goes on and on. Here's a screen-shot after typing in "Converge":

Now I will say that much of the stuff covered on Lambgoat is not represented. It depends on the record label. Just about all of Equal Vision's stuff is here, however nothing from Escape Artist is. Ferret and Trustkill are represented, but no Deathwish. Luckily, the Real Rhapsody people keep adding stuff on a daily basis. A month ago there was nothing from Hydra Head available... today I've listened to Cave In's Jupiter and Pelican's Australasia. But honestly, it doesn't matter to me how much of the underground stuff is here. Thanks to Lambgoat, literally hundreds of CDs arrive at my doorstep. However, most of these are metal/hardcore/thrash/etc, so I don't get to hear much outside of what Lambgoat covers. Once in awhile I'll get something odd (I once received a greatest hits CD by, but for the most part it's albums from the same ten labels, in addition to some lousy demo material. This is where Real Rhapsody really shines for me. I get to hear (and, if things go well, ultimately enjoy) albums I would have never considered buying. For instance, I got the chance to spend some quality time with Stevie Wonder's back catalog. I've also been rocking the new Foo Fighters album lately. I really like the record, but I never would have thought to buy it.

I know I sound like some Real Rhapsody spokesperson, but in all honestly, it's probably the most effective $10 bucks I spend every month. If you're online for a good portion of the day, and like to listen to all types of music, then this is definitely a worthy investment.
