where's a chair when you need one?

Since people are talking about this Geraldo Rivera/straight edge piece, I thought I'd say a few things...

I'm not straight edge, however I respect people who don't chemically enhance their demeanor. Then again, if you're going to enforce your beliefs upon me, then fuck you. So basically, I'm not hip to straight edge related violence, but the Geraldo report on At Large (FoxNews) was total garbage. The two crimes the detective who was interviewed referred to had nothing to do with straight edge violence. The perpetrators were reportedly straight edge, but the crimes themselves were just your typical "let's beat up this guy because of this..." type deals. I mean, how specious is that? There's a guy who lives near here that beat up his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend while wearing a Burger King uniform. Should we view this crime as evidence that people who work at fast food restaurants are prone to violence? Roughly speaking, this is the same kind of scenario. While there has indeed been some unprovoked SLC and Reno violence from straight edgers in the past, these particular incidents are just plain stupid. Then again, Geraldo was never known for journalistic prowess or integrity (anyone remember the Al Capone vault?).

They even had former Earth Crisis, and current Freya vocalist Karl Buechner on the show to [seemingly] balance out the rhetoric. Karl was rather subdued and not communicating his thoughts fast enough for live TV, so Geraldo frequently interrupted him. At one point Geraldo loudly and impatiently demanded that Karl (as if Buechner was some soft of straight edge Godfather) condemn the aforementioned attacks. It was contrived drama at its, well, most contrived.

The bottom line is... to someone who doesn't know anything about straight edge (i.e. 99% of America), they're now scared of edgers. Personally, I don't care, but it was funny to watch an idiot like Geraldo attempt to take a complex issue, condense it into a digestible biscuit of right and wrong, and feed it to his viewers. For anyone who wonders why so many people in this country don't understand complex issues like stem cell research, just watch an hour or two of FoxNews or MSNBC and you'll figure it out.

it's funny how a scene devoted to abstaining from alcohol and drugs is painted as so negative and violent...though sxe is completely retarded altogether

Does anyone else remember when this was big news back in 96 and 97-ish? Right when the SLC stuff happened, the shit hit the fan and news programs on 20/20 and 60 Minutes were condemning straight edge.

john_doe_ 6/7/2005 12:37:02 AM

remember when geraldo opened al capone's vault and there was nothing in there? same could be said about all his sensationalized news pieces.

"Straigt Edge originated in the New York area." Shit like this is the reason I don't believe ANYTHING I see on tv news anymore. There were similar uninformed and just fcking wrong comments on network newscasts when the Dimebag thing happened. Makes me seriously wonder, if they can get these facts so seriously fcked up, (I mean fck, I don't even know anyone outside e-friends who are sxe and I know where the fck it comes from) then how am I to trust anything they say about anything, EVAR?

This whole piece disturbed me more then informed me. I am not straight edge nor claim to be. But the fact that they associated "sxe" w/ the beatings, is like associating the all cops to the rodney king beating. i really wish that point would have been brought up during the broadcast.

xrebelheartsx_ 6/10/2005 2:37:12 PM

what really gets me, since i wasn't expecting this to be a good portrayal of straight edge at all, is how fox news claims to be "fair and balanced", which is obviously bullshit. if they were so "fair and balanced", then why was there no "news worthy" program about someone being hit in the head with a hammer for being straight edge? fcking assheads. fck fox news, and fck geraldo rivera.

you are relying on network television for information.
