Amid the rubbish that usually floods the mainstream rock and metal markets, Tool sets itself apart from the rest with its unique creativity and musicianship. Drawn to Los Angeles for their own personal reasons and endeavors, vocalist Maynard James Keenan and guitarist/artist Adam Jones decided to start a band, while keeping their day jobs, in early-1990. Recruiting bassist Paul D'amour and drummer Danny Carey, Tool would release its first CD on Volcano Records, entitled "Opiate." It wasn't until the band released its full-length, "Undertow" (1993), that Tool gained notoriety, thanks to heavy media coverage and word-of-mouth about its unique brand of metal, and its striking presentation. Following the release, the band would experience a personnel change, with Justin Chancellor taking over bass duties from the departing Paul D'Amour. After a nearly three-year wait, the unit would release it's Grammy Award winning "Aenima" in 1996. In late-2000, Tool would release its first CD/DVD/VHS set, "Salival," which included live footage and recordings of the band. In 2001, Tool's highly anticipated album, "Lateralus," would be released. The record debuted at the top of the Billboard charts and solidified the group's status as one of most successful metal bands ever. The band has toured worldwide since its inception. With its earlier music exhibiting anger and angst, Tool has grown and matured musically, producing what could be best described as pounding mood music, comparable, but not limited, to Neurosis or even ISIS. Fans of metal and hardcore alike should check out one of mainstream rock's premier metal bands. Frontman Keenan can also be found in A Perfect Circle (Virgin Records). read less
