Sounding like a straightedge, youth-crew band with political lyrics at inception, Sweden's Refused evolved into a politically charged, avant-garde punk/hardcore band that was well respected and followed by many in the scene right until the band disbanded in late-1998. From the ashes of Step Forward, Refused came together in 1992, playing its first show in Lulea, Sweden, and soon after, recorded a self-titled demo. In 1993, the band joined the Burning Heart Records roster, and released its debut CD, "This is the New Deal." At this time, Refused agreed to another record deal with Startrec and Management (now Startracks). In early-1994, the band's debut full-length, "This Just Might Be the Truth." The new album and CD-singles pushed Refused to the forefront of Sweden's hardcore scene, leading to massive coverage by television, radio, and general press coverage. The band would go on tour in support of its new release, and in mid-1994, recorded its CDEP, "Everlasting," which would be available stateside through Equal Vision Records. In 1995, the Refused showed up on a split CDEP with Randy, where each band covered each other's songs (i.e. Coalesce/Boy Sets Fire). Late-1995 would begin the recording of the band's second full-length, "Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent," which Victory Records in the U.S would release in 1996. Refused would find its way back to Burning Heart in 1997, and release its final releases, "The Shape of Punk to Come" and the "New Noise" single for the label. Amid a tour in the U.S., Refused decided to disband September 26, 1998 in Atlanta, Georgia. The band would play its final show in Harrisonburg, Virginia on October 6. Throughout Refused's prominent career, the band would tour with numerous high-profile acts, including Entombed, Earth Crisis, and Snapcase. Few bands today emulate the rawness, energy, and passion Refused exhibited. read less
