Iron Thrones, a Minnesota progressive metal act with ties back to the metalcore band Nehemiah, has taken a few actions to reinvent themselves as of late. The first step was ditching their original moniker, Everest, which the band had used for their 2006 EP, Where Earth Meets the Sky. Step two was the decision to release their debut full-length, "Visions of Light," for free download via their website, a move that will likely grow in popularity as online music piracy continues to remain commonplace. And for the third step - take note, this one is the key - they made Visions of Light a legitimately impressive record, completely dispelling the idea that a self-released record offered up for free download must certainly be of marginal quality. In fact, Visions of Light emits an accomplished feel, and would be right at home on well-established metal labels like Prosthetic or Lifeforce Records. Musically, Iron Thrones brings a blend of solid influences to the table, giving nods to Opeth, Cult of Luna, and Between the Buried and Me throughout the record. Well transitioned songwriting is their sturdy foundation for excellence, and it makes their brand of melodic progressive metal flow effortlessly. The instrumentation is incredibly tight and complementary; none of the unnecessary guitar wankery, awkward song shifts, or off-the-wall inclusions that can make a BTBAM album come off as gratuitous are present on Visions of Light. Instead, Iron Thrones delivers a far more fluid approach, shifting the focus away from overly showy guitar work back to epic swells and layered melodies. And to top it off, just enough hardcore influence shines through to give these nine tracks a passionate feel. A few moments that feel a bit too symphonic (most notably the opening track, "Swell to the Surface") comprise the only drawback, but only because they pale in comparison to the abundance of soaring leads and memorable songwriting progressions that Iron Thrones crams into the disc. Lackluster album art might also draw some apathy, but that's likely to be too far down on the lists of listeners treating themselves to a free download to matter. Visions of Light is simply sound on all levels, and should easily find a home in listening rotations already filled with Opeth, Cult of Luna, and Between the Buried and Me records. Bottom Line: Iron Thrones' Visions of Light is capable of triggering two very different results in the metal community. On one hand, it could very well send labels scrambling to pick up a band that is skilled and determined enough to self-produce and self-release a record of this high quality. But it might also represent a first step away from the traditional confines of band-label relationships. Iron Thrones certainly isn't the first band to attempt this method of music distribution, but rarely is the output so terrific. Is this strategy of self-releasing free music here to stay Only time will tell. But for now, fans of melodic progressive metal have absolutely no excuse for not heading over to the band's site and checking this out.

Why would we put up an mp3 if they have the entire album up for free on their site? Just go there and grab the entire thing. Think, McFly, Think!

"http://www.ironthrones.com/visionsoflight/ITVOL9384756102.zip" -- Not any more, it ain't. It's available on lots of blogs and I think on mediafire in the same quality and such for those who don't want us to know you're downloading it for some reason.
