When are some of these bands (or more importantly record labels) going to learn that, their target audience can tell the difference between paying tribute to an influence and blatant thievery Sure, the fly-by-night, flavor-of-the-week, Hot Topic fans are going to suckle from whatever rebellious looking teat you put in front of their hungry little mouths, but the true fans - the ones who have been bleeding, sweating and spending all over this scene for decades - deserve something with substance. That being said, the latest slab o' tunes from A Life Once Lost, Iron Gag, does show that these five cats from Philly do know how to throwdown in that tough-guy, crushing, slightly southern-fried American metal sense of the word, tracks like "Detest" (which features a solo courtesy of Devin Townsend) and "Firewater Joyride" also prove that these dudes have listened to the last Lamb Of God record. a lot. While this comparison makes sense when you consider that LOG vocalist Randy Blythe lent his knowledge to the disc in the form of vocal producer and guest vocals on the standout "Pigeonholed," that doesn't forgive ALOL for borrowing more than a few cups of sugar from their neighbor. The few times where the band does step outside the box and do their own thing, such as "Worship," I hear potential for a formidable force in today's scene. While other moments, "The Wanderer" and "All Teeth" come across as contrived and fail to deliver much excitement. Bottom Line: Ultimately, A Life Once Lost is a good band that has penned some pretty meaty and crushing songs for this album. Unfortunately, this is a group that tends to be at their best when using ideas that someone else has already had. Once they find their own identity, expect to hear something much more worthy of praise.

boring garbage

Justin_ 10/16/2007 11:26:28 AM

the first two releases from this band were refreshing..especially "flies". then it all went downhill. if Iron Gag is a rip-off of Lamb of God..then A Great Artist is surely a blatant rip off of Meshuggah. Listen to that f*cking record..there's no difference between that record and what Meshuggah has been trying to do musically for sometime..except Meshuggah does it far better.

vdburns_ 10/16/2007 11:31:00 AM

Iron Ball Gag.

cmd_ 10/16/2007 11:35:31 AM

man, when 'flies' came out i was so stoked on this band....now im embarrassed.

anonymous 10/16/2007 11:46:05 AM

another band with initial potential who left artistic creativity by the wayside for potentially 'commercial' success

justinbean_ 10/16/2007 12:27:58 PM

this is a crappy review of a decent (but not great) album. hmph.

Vultures_ 10/16/2007 12:31:49 PM

This album bummed me out so much. Total decline

doom_ 10/16/2007 12:36:13 PM

Not really sure why Hot Topic gets the hate they do. They've been a store for 20 years & its not like they just pick bands out to glorify... like everything in business, a contract is written. If a band really hated Hot Topic that much, they'd say no. Plus the cds are cheap.

doom_ 10/16/2007 12:38:01 PM

btw, shitty f*cking album.

saas_kobra_ 10/16/2007 12:57:40 PM

STOP SAYING "SOUTHERN FRIED"

j_ 10/16/2007 1:39:22 PM

I agree with justin, Totally trying to pull a meshuggah except failed. and now they sound like every other band going for that shitty southern rock n roll sound like everytime i die

Mark_ 10/16/2007 1:40:01 PM

This cd is a huge disappointment this band was awsome but this cd just sounds like gay. lamb of god + mastadon = gay

kurt_ 10/16/2007 1:58:23 PM

i definitely agree with this review

anonymous 10/16/2007 2:01:10 PM

Shitty review. this was obviously the first time this dude ever listened to ALOL

find their own identity? "Hunter" had a unique sound that actually made it listenable metalcore. i haven't listened to this one yet but if they changed their sound, they need to call it quits.

Fuck_Gluck_ 10/16/2007 3:14:05 PM

As much as I love ALOL, the songs they allowed to preview weren't very impressive. I'm not surprised with this album raiting in the least bit.

Evilf22_ 10/16/2007 3:19:52 PM

no heard. but i know exactly what it sounds like. terrible band.

thalassa_ 10/16/2007 3:39:10 PM

this is one of the worst reviews I've ever read. 1 paragraph railing hot topic and the fan base, 1 paragraph devoted to the entire album. do you call this your job?

no_heroes_ 10/16/2007 5:17:04 PM

The few times where the band does step outside the box and do their own thing, such as "Worship," I hear potential for a formidable force in today's scene. i didn't know that ripping off mastodon was original these days.

I second the banning of "southern-fried." It's time to strengthen our lexicons.

auspex_ 10/16/2007 8:39:08 PM

I doubt reviewers get paid here, so no, it's not their job. This album sucks, I don't need more then two paragraphs explaining why.

Travis Aker_ 10/17/2007 12:30:18 AM

This cd is horrible in my opinion I like there first one off of Ferret and there other one, besides Hot Topics cd's are not cheap at all, some of them are really high in price.

Selvin_ 10/17/2007 1:09:19 AM

Shitty CD. Shittier review.

pseudoxme_ 10/17/2007 5:09:12 AM

i haven't even listened to this cd yet, but i saw the 5/10 lambgoat rating coming from a mile away.

whoshotthefrog_ 10/17/2007 7:58:39 AM

I guess I'm one of the few people that like this album. It's not the greatest album out there right now but I do enjoy listening to it.

10/10 - 100 - A+ review

doom_ 10/17/2007 11:53:14 AM

Actually Hot Topic new release cds are only $9.99. If they're not $9.99... they're $13.99 or less.

piecemaker_ 10/17/2007 1:57:29 PM

i just came to look at this piece of shit to make sure it scored lower than BTBAM.

jason_ 10/17/2007 2:35:02 PM

you can toss the notion of "music as art" straight out of the f*cking window when bands just regurgitate the same shit as other bands, but half assed. there is NO ARGUMENT! NONE!!!! ....two cds ago this band was ripping off meshuggah..now they are ripping off Lamb of God. Music is art...artists can borrow, but please stop becoming carbon copies....BE ORIGINAL..be GREAT ARTISTS

robert_ 10/17/2007 4:11:30 PM

this band has always been bad and always will be

TruthBomb_ 10/17/2007 4:32:02 PM

Funny how the ALOL guy is crying about a CD review...that's life, grow up. He apparently grew a pair of balls when he insulted Ogle personally, no doubt due to it being on an Internet forum; I doubt he'd say it to his face....weak.

caranalga_ 10/18/2007 12:25:07 AM

why has lambgoat stooped so low? it sounds like such shit.

dick_ 10/18/2007 12:32:50 AM

they're still not as southern fried as "Hell Yeah!"

hathair_ 10/18/2007 1:05:00 AM

The Beatles of metalcore!!!

chrisdrumsx_ 10/18/2007 11:33:40 AM

great review, these songs are slacking with subpar drumming and copycat vocals of lamb of god. if there should be any GOOD copycat, it should be meshuggah like their other albums. This album was rushed

Its unfortunate that this bands releases are not getting better. I want to blame Ferret for it but maybe ALOL are just making the music they want despite what fans of their previous albums want. I liked Flies and Great Artist was good at the time, They put on a good live show. Maybe next album...

chas_ 10/18/2007 4:44:58 PM

yeah this record blows.

uhhh_ 10/18/2007 6:47:47 PM

Terribly short review but a perfect score.

Mermaid Throatfucker_ 10/18/2007 7:45:32 PM

I don't understand the constant comparisons to Lamb of God. This record is even less Lamb of God sounding then the last one. Firewater Joyride absolutely would never be a Lamb of God song. This reviewer sucks.

goosh_ 10/18/2007 9:00:33 PM

the above person is obviously deaf and dumb

james_ 10/19/2007 3:01:54 PM

cds at hot topic can get as high as 18.99...that's just a fact. why on earth would you even defend that store? this shit sucks, blah blah flies is better of course, it's a shame, i'll still mosh though

Corey Ray_ 10/21/2007 12:02:04 AM

this band writes music they like, influenced by bands they like. They are gnarly dudes on the side as well.

it still amazes me the band that released "Open your Mouth for the speechless.." released this album, and the last few actually. Yes there was a record before flies and it was good

I f*cking hate it I was upset that I wasted 30 minutes of my life on this piece of shit

xNihilistx_ 12/30/2007 7:17:04 PM

I know I'm super late on this but still...I bought it the day it came out so...Even though ALOL ripped off Meshuggah a good amount on A Great Artist, I thought it was f*ckin heavy as shit...Hunter was alright, I liked some of the tracks...But this! IRON DRAG...man this shit is the worst...I seriously think they smoked way too much weed during writing and recording this record. So much so they wernt even really paying attention to what it turned out to be...Probably just so high all the time they

Tyler_ 1/28/2008 3:04:48 PM

You call ALOL's 'Hunter' unique? You've obviously never heard Meshuggah. ALOL has clearly done a bit more than 'borrow' from the kings of polymetric, and oddly timed pieces. But this cd will definitely be in every flavor-of-the-week, 'Hot Topic' sprawling, mall-metal tool's player.
