When the floodgates really opened for metalcore almost a decade ago, Poison The Well was one of the most prominent acts in the genre's new wave. Their sizable fan base and general success caught the eye of Atlantic Records, who released their last album, You Come Before You. Despite selling over a hundred thousand copies, that album was regarded as a commercial flop. Fast forward almost four years and Poison The Well have parted ways with Atlantic, found a home at Ferret and released Versions, their fourth full-length album. Gone forever are the pseudo-metal riffs and drumming of the first few records, replaced by more deliberately paced rock inspired by the likes of the Deftones, Converge and even a bit of Murder City Devils. I suppose it's not particularly surprising that Poison The Well have shifted direction over the years. Even what could arguably be called their finest moment, The Opposite of December, synthesized what many bands had done before into something marketable. I'm not even sure if a band that has seen this many member changes (twenty-three members in nine years) could be expected to maintain anything besides their bankable name. With Versions, Poison The Well borrows most of their tricks from some of the most innovative acts of the last ten years and rolls them into one big, poorly-arranged mess of impersonal style and shitty lyrics. If you're the type to ooh and aah at tambourines, horns and slide guitar in neo-hardcore songs, you're probably already eating thisup. The disc opens with perhaps its most blatant rip-off, "Letter Thing." I'm not really exaggerating when I say that this song is basically a faster, less interesting cover of Converge's "Last Light." If you traded in that tracks' impressive drumming for a more basic beat, a tambourine and some Mike Ski-style shouts about "sunshine," you would end up with this disc's opening track. In fact, most of the disc's heavier moments are equally inspired by You Fail Me, while its softer side features melodies that, while not entirely unpleasant, ultimately go nowhere. "Breathing's For The Birds" prominently features lots of simplistic riffing and tambourine shaking beneath its forgettable melody. "Nagaina" gets a special award for featuring the disc's absolute worst lyric, "I am a snake, I let my children go to fend for themselves." It might not seem that bad in theory, but when delivered in Jeffrey Moreira's best Daniel Johns impression, it lacks any and all emotional weight. Once "Prematurio El Baby" steals its entire concept from Cursive's Happy Hollow, I pretty much gave up all hope of this record going anywhere good. The reason so many people seem to have connected with the band's past work is the raw emotion they've always been able to capture, not necessarily the band's originality. That's where Poison The Well has truly failed with Versions. As corny as "Nerdy" might have been in retrospect, there was something to those words that many fans genuinely connected with. Versions is forty-two minutes of sterile songwriting hiding just beneath a slightly raw veneer, provided by the producers behind Refused's "The Shape of Punk to Come." Are these the worst songs I've ever heard in my life Not by a longshot. Most casual listeners could probably enjoy certain aspects of Versions. Every so often, it is interesting to hear a horn or a country-style guitar line pop up in one of these songs. My personal disappointment in this album has more to do with the band's insistence that recycling someone else's ideas with half-assed arrangements is somehow worthy of anyone's record-buying dollar. These aren't naïve youngsters who don't know any better. These are grown men leaning on a well-established name to pass off a subpar record onto unsuspecting fans. Bottom Line: Poison The Well has never been one of my favorite bands, but they have always been able to create respectable, contemporary records that gave the audience something to connect with. Versions lacks the songwriting skill exhibited on the band's last full-length and the emotion captured on the band's early releases. What's left without these past strengths is a record so falsely sure of its own creativity that it shines an unforgiving light on its near complete lack thereof. Versions isn't a completely worthless venture, it's just devoid of any genuine emotion or effort.

this cd, sounds like the B-Side of "You Come Before You" ..... it's good ..but i don't know... it feels like there's something missing ....

Dillon_ 4/9/2007 7:42:24 PM

This cd is kicking some serious ass. The Dark country overtones are so refreshing. PTW cannot fail.

whitexdrugs_ 4/10/2007 10:25:54 PM

can't stop playing pleading post, slow good morning, and prematurito el baby over and over again.. glad ptw went to ferret..

arty_mcfarty_ 4/24/2007 2:58:58 PM

its funny because i looked at the top of this review, and saw that that score was a four and IMMEDIATELY knew that cory did it shit review.........again

jeff_ 4/24/2007 3:00:58 PM

cory thinks that converge is the only band that matters and any other attempt at playing music is ripping off converge

monolithic_ 4/24/2007 3:01:55 PM

So, wait. Basically Cory is saying that it's okay to be "derivative" as long as you rip off Shai Hulud and Unbroken as opposed to the Deftones and Cursive, since the former bands are clearly more "emotionsl" or whatever. Yeah, okay. Good that we got that straight.

anonymous 4/24/2007 3:02:32 PM

i sorta agree. I like Letter Thing a lot, but the rest is a big meh.

fuck you_ 4/24/2007 3:16:07 PM

to the guy who wrote thsi revewe...... FUYCKYOU you think that poison the well is bad but you just sit here saying they have no talent but you are the one with no talent i hope you stab yourself with a lead pencil and die f*ck you f*ck you f*ck you f*ck YOU

Dan_PTW_ 4/24/2007 3:18:50 PM

OOOH, you don't like our music! boo f*cking hoo. Cry me a river fanboy. We have more talent in our little finger than you do in your whole body. What band do you play for tough guy? huh? probably some bull shit in flames rifoff. gays.

ihavegas_ 4/24/2007 3:29:21 PM

I AM ANGRY AT SOMEONE ELSES OPINION, ONLY MINE MATTERS. *misspells every other word* I AM ANGRY.

ihavegas_ 4/24/2007 3:31:00 PM

p.s. while i dont agree with the score or the review for that matter, its corys opinion of the album and i took the time to read it unfortunately.

joeolm_ 4/24/2007 3:42:01 PM

A+ review, the ski rearogy was solid. i don't know why this guy still thinks he can f*cking sing. has anyone seen PTW live, ever? the only thing resonating from that guy is the light reflecting off his bald spot.

tomer_ 4/24/2007 3:46:27 PM

this is the lamest review I've heard in a while. Cory, you suck.

mike_ 4/24/2007 3:52:23 PM

its funny because i looked at the top of this review, and saw that that score was a four and IMMEDIATELY knew that cory did it shit review.........again

hahahaha_ 4/24/2007 3:52:48 PM

hahahaha....cory.

scotty_ 4/24/2007 3:54:19 PM

corey, you should have kept your bias out of this about their member changes and marketable name. you hit it dead on with saying that this band is good because of their aggressive nature and not for originality, but accept the release for what it is without concerning the current line up. seriously, even if it is not original, it is good. it obviously isn't "opposite of december" but it is still very aggressive and awesome in a different fashion.

threexs_ 4/24/2007 4:09:47 PM

this album is 10/10 seriously worst f*cking review cory has ever wrote

hmoney_ 4/24/2007 4:12:07 PM

thank god for this review, i'm glad to hear others feel this way. Gone is almost everything i loved about this band, and it pains me because i loved all their previous work, better luck next time i guess

bitchslap_ 4/24/2007 4:15:03 PM

Great album, shit review.

sam kinnison_ 4/24/2007 4:19:33 PM

cory can't write an unbiased review. this record is the most natural, non-forced sounding release of this band's career. show some 'spect.

thealmightyjim_ 4/24/2007 4:25:35 PM

I don't know what album you listened to but Versions is f*cking GREAT. It will without a doubt be on my top ten for '07 releases.

evan_ 4/24/2007 4:35:14 PM

I am happy the most "Blatant Rip off" was his favorite track. Retard.

Dave Davenport_ 4/24/2007 4:54:10 PM

Look Cory...you are obviously a biased jerk that needs to get the shit kicked out of his punkass. f*ck you. Poison The Well and the album "Versions" as a whole is completely fresh, different, and emotional beyond belief. This is by far the best album of the year...RWAKE's new one is up there too. You are seriously retarded if you can't at least give this album an 8 out of 10. Track 4 was the ONLY track on this album I did not adore. I mean what the f*ck are you talking about "poorly arranged"

John_ 4/24/2007 5:26:51 PM

I have read some bad reviews in my lifetime and granted reviews are just educated opinions but this review for poison the well ranks with one of the worst. If it really is true that this guy graduated with a degree in english he doesn't show it at all. It actually makes me think what this guy learned in his 4 years at college. There is no musical knowledge within this review other than spouting off some shout outs to other bands. There are only biased ramblings within the 5 paragraphs of wri

the oil_ 4/24/2007 5:59:00 PM

shit review, this is a 7 or 8

bkr_ 4/24/2007 5:59:23 PM

cory, sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree...this is one of those times we disagree, this deserves MUCH better than a 4, hell, I'd even settle for a 6.5 out of you, but a 4, c'mon daawwwwwwggg...

thank you_ 4/24/2007 6:05:21 PM

this album sucked. hard.

anonymous 4/24/2007 6:13:59 PM

This record is receiving great reviews elsewhere. It's shocking that it's lambgoat (and embarrassing that it's Cory) getting it right. I'm totally unbiased about PTW as I was looking forward to hearing this, but wow, awful. I don't want Opposite of December again, but I don't want this garbage either.

twodegreesbelow_ 4/24/2007 6:34:47 PM

shit band no read ever

Sammy_ 4/24/2007 6:42:30 PM

POO ON YOU! This cd is the best thing that has ever came out Im telling you

oh man_ 4/24/2007 6:46:41 PM

not a huge poison the well fan, but this is more original that it's given credit for. id rather listen to this than anything else they've done. 6/10

ese_bauber_ 4/24/2007 7:12:19 PM

cory is right. cd sucks. track 3 is a shit fest. it is all so contrived.

thanos_ 4/24/2007 7:27:19 PM

this band sucks and so do all its fans, this goes for all time too, this band was never good, anyone who thinks so is kidding themselves, let this genre die like techno did already

God_ 4/24/2007 7:59:26 PM

boring, uninspired, 2/10 would've been generous.

cuntoxfuck_ 4/24/2007 8:15:50 PM

I'm beginning to realise that the majority of the readership of this site is 15 or under.

onepartloss_ 4/24/2007 8:29:12 PM

Great album, great band.

Hell_yeah_ 4/24/2007 8:33:28 PM

This coming from a gay that gave the new Locust album 8/10. Cory has shit between his ears. Like everyone else that's f*cking retarded, Cory has proven to be the same by talking about Opposite of December for a paragraph and a half. Gimmie a f*cking break, you f*cking morons need to get over this shit and stop hating a band that has tried to do something different everytime and be successful at it. If you dont want your bands to change, listen to Terror.

suicidewatch_ 4/24/2007 8:44:05 PM

the funniest comment was the guy who said to stab yourself with a lead pencil and hope you die. What you think is lead is actually carbon.. hahaha anyways, this reminds me of that one review where graham gave btbam - silent circus a 58/100. too funny. ptw is awesome, they basically made an entire career off one album.

hxcobd_ 4/24/2007 8:48:39 PM

So stoked about this review, f*ck this band

vCREATIONv_ 4/24/2007 8:49:30 PM

WOW...a f*cking 4!! you, sir, are retarded. this album is innovative and exciting. You are a chump. I give this album an 8.

hxcobd_ 4/24/2007 8:54:19 PM

This album is The Opposite of (innovating and exciting.) (lol, get it?) Also, The Locust kick the shit out of Poison the Well.

mywellforeverpoisoned_ 4/24/2007 8:54:58 PM

u r such a dck, this album changed my life forever alredy. right now the poison the well - versions tatoo on my arm is begining to heal and when it does i will use that arm to punch the shit ou t of you. this band is the most emotional band ever created. when i listen to mozart or bach or beetoven i know that they would love to think that someday thier song would help to create such a band. if you think you can write something just to make people hate a band you are so ful of shit.

xturtlex_ 4/24/2007 9:15:26 PM

cory you are a f*cking gay

zero_x_potential_ 4/24/2007 9:23:46 PM

I don't particularly agree with the review, but at least you supported your beliefs without just saying it sucked. I was disappointed by Versions, but it's pretty much a natural progression.

united_ninety_three_ 4/24/2007 9:49:37 PM

lol at every comment above. i'm not by any means a ptw fan, but i do enjoy this album to a degree. you guys are all gays who will abandon any liking of this band (again)at some point after some new jed comes along to say they suck. seriously, stop posting shitheels.

zeroman_ 4/24/2007 9:52:53 PM

Not a very fair review. Nothing you said really supports why this album is bad in your eyes. If anything, they are sounding a lot like Danzig or a very bombastic Angels of Light. And that isn't a very bad thing at all. And your comment about "Nagaina," if you knew what the song was referencing, the line "I am a snake, I let my children go to fend for themselves," would make sense to you. It's simple. Use google or wikipedia next time. And another thing, if you actually listened to other t

mariful_ 4/24/2007 10:19:57 PM

unders_core_ 4/24/2007 11:15:56 PM

look at me. I am cory. I write pretentious reviews. I am closed-minded. I think I am open-minded.

cxmr_ 4/25/2007 2:57:21 AM

this is an unfortunately bad review. usually this guy's on the right tracks, but this..! i can appreciate that he may not like the record, but all that about cursive and converge is just wrong. Don't let this review put you off checking out this really great album.

_stab_joey_bishop__ 4/25/2007 6:21:06 AM

lol @ ALL the f*cking girl pants fanbois sucking some dck over their boring music. I'm three songs into thsi and I hate it already. Lol at the gays going "OMG YOU DIDN'T SAY WHY YOU didn't LIYKE IT!!!" after a paragraph of reasons why it's not good, then people bitching about him comparing this release to PTW's past releases.... yea, that was just outlandish! You're all gays. f*ck you, f*ck your girl pants, bandanas, spikey black hair and somber swagger, you're all assfuyckers cause e

trapped_in_texas_ 4/25/2007 7:20:19 AM

I haven't really listened closely to Versions yet, but I've heard bits and pieces of it. It sounded boring. The number one reason I know this sucks: my brother likes it. When he's not listening to Avenged Sevenfold he listens to PTW.

xnvb_ 4/25/2007 7:48:44 AM

Cory's a f*cking tool and I usually disagree with everything he says, but he's spot on with this review. This album is boring as f*ck.

girth_ 4/25/2007 9:00:52 AM

this review sucks this cd isnt bad

Alexander_ 4/25/2007 9:13:16 AM

I didn't need a review to know this cd would suck.

anonymous 4/25/2007 10:10:03 AM

everyone i know says this cd is amazing..i've yet to hear it cept for like one song, which i thought was bad. still wouldn't give it a 4 though. that's just plain disrespectful. it's like cory doesn't acknowledge that the band has talent at all which is preposterous. something had to keep them going all these years. seriously, i said it before, i'll say it again..FIRE CORY ASAP

Nowonmai_ 4/25/2007 10:21:09 AM

yeah this review is kind of f*cking shameful. I agree that it seems like a b-sides of You Come Before You, but at the same time all the instruments they use makes something really progressive and interesting. I need to give this album more time.

eadup_ 4/25/2007 10:47:46 AM

strongly disagree with tihs review

Lochlan_ 4/25/2007 11:29:03 AM

Dude this is the most retarded review. How the f*ck is Letter Thing a rip of Last Light. I just can't hear it. Attempt at controversy perhaps?

conduit_ 4/25/2007 11:33:42 AM

this album is pretty f*cking boring. there is not one riff on the album that is in any way memorable and the vocals are just unlistenable.

bboates_ 4/25/2007 12:28:14 PM

I don't particularly agree with the review, but at least you supported your beliefs without just saying it sucked. I was disappointed by Versions, but it's pretty much a natural progression. posted by zero_x_potential () on 4/24/2007 9:23:46 PM only comment so far that isn't trash

bboates_ 4/25/2007 1:07:55 PM

yeah, converge is one of my favorite bands, and the thought never even occured to me once while listening to versions.

taketheplunge_ 4/25/2007 1:19:51 PM

Jeff.._ 4/25/2007 3:05:20 PM

I agree with cory on this one actually. I was really anticipating this album and I barely made it through letter things on a casual listen, then being a poison the well fan forced myself to sit down with the record and listen to the whole thing and just became really bored with it, I'm very disappointed with this release.

YouGotScanned_ 4/25/2007 3:17:35 PM

Someone needs to stop letting this guy do reviews on here. Seriously. What a piece of shit. I haven't heard the record yet but I can just tell the guy has a completely biased mindset. Every person who I've talked to about this record so far has called it "a perfect 10 - one of the best records of the year so far". Cory you just have a shit taste

anonymous 4/25/2007 3:35:38 PM

let's be really honest here. this is a shitty album that none of you gays will care about after the novelty of being new wears off. you guys will just go back to listening to opposites of december and reminiscing about when ptw made "good" songs like nerdy.

Will_ 4/25/2007 4:12:13 PM

Why would you have somebody who clearly disdains this band and was probably determined not to like this album review it? This review is tripe with an agenda, not an unbiased criticism of the music in question.

kurt_ 4/25/2007 4:27:21 PM

every single person who said this is any good knows that it has taken a few listens and it really grows on you, id be surprised to hear if he actually gave this album any time at all, this review is just not correct in its comparisons, im also sick and tired of people complaining about how the drums dont sound as good since opposite of december, if you actually listen to opposite you can hear he screws up all the time and is way less solid and way less creative so stop being a dumbass and saying

klae_ 4/25/2007 5:42:42 PM

you all are arguing on the f*cking internet...and thats retarded. its a lambgoat review....who the f*ck cares

Cory_ 4/25/2007 6:47:20 PM

I listened to this album at LEAST a dozen times trying desperately to hear what everyone was raving about. It's honestly just amusing me how willing to buy into hype everyone is. This record is a piece of shit and reviews one way or the other won't change that.

surfjam_ 4/25/2007 7:17:13 PM

lol at 500 converge references

Plasticearl_ 4/25/2007 7:51:05 PM

I can't stand this style of music anymore, and I used to love this band. BUUTTTT I gave this record a shot based of theprp guys review, and I really like it. Even if you don't like the band (which Corey clearly does not) you have to at least respect the varied song writing this record has. Christ, it sounds NOTHING Like converge.

chrisdrumsx_ 4/25/2007 8:39:56 PM

shit review. AT LEAST a 6/10. get the head out your ass?

burn_ 4/25/2007 9:03:24 PM

10/10 album 0/10 review

nitro_ 4/26/2007 11:06:04 AM

PoisonYourMom_ 4/26/2007 11:35:45 AM

that's it Cory, you've taken this too far. i'm going to your house and i'll rip you ten new jerks after my dck is through with you.

anonymous 4/26/2007 6:06:19 PM

Hahaha all you fanboy suckers make me smile. When PTW released You Come Before You, you were all saying "PTW IS GAY, OMG TEHY SUX!", and now that Cory said Versions sucks (which it does), you are all riding in on your white horses to save a band's shitty record that really is the most insipid, uninspiring bull shit I've heard in my life.

El_ 4/26/2007 6:16:33 PM

This CD is Great. Cory licks rim. Brad who plays guitar in PTW also licks rim, but he was in coma eternal so we all expect that, what a f*cking fruit. PTW should fire him and get more members of candiria.

_atab_joey_bishop__ 4/26/2007 9:43:13 PM

everyone i know says this cd is amazing..i've yet to hear it cept for like one song, which i thought was bad. still wouldn't give it a 4 though. that's just plain disrespectful. >>>>>> let's take a minute and soak in the stupidest post on the internet..... awww, cory made da band cry =*( Well yea, I haven't had anything to eat from mcdonalds but all the children and mentally handicap I talk to LOVE it, so I give it a 10/10

strongerthanall_ 4/27/2007 12:00:13 AM

Nerdy is one of the worst songs i have ever heard

eventhebear_ 4/27/2007 1:07:25 AM

this cd is good. much better than a 4, but if you look at it like everything is being ripped off i guess you wouldn't like it. it's not their best release but i applaud them for the change of pace and creativity. don't listen to this expecting it to be hardcore

colby_ 4/27/2007 7:40:16 AM

great record. Opposite of December was layyyme compared to this. I can't see how you can call any of the music on this a rip off. f*cking deftones?!! idiote! i think you should get somebody else to review this, maybe the guy who did the MeWithoutYou review (that was a good review). Yeah, nerdy's a really poor song. get over it.

jwood_ 4/27/2007 7:42:52 AM

its hilarious the way people commenting on this expect all the fans to be girlpants kids. this record is f*cking terrific, unlike those kids. learn.

thereapersson_ 4/27/2007 9:55:03 AM

All the band references listed in this review are far from correct. This is the least perfect of PTW's albums, but it isn't a terrible record by any means. As far as i'm concerned, YCBY is their best work, and anyone who says otherwise is a gay stuck in a hardcore time-warp. Things change, even if those changes are less than favorable. Anyway, 6 or 7 is what I would have given this, but not a 4. Everyone has their own opinions though, however it's funny to see the arguments laid out here...

thereapersson_ 4/27/2007 9:55:47 AM

You gays are almost as bad as those gays who argue about videogames. Almost.

thereapersson_ 4/27/2007 9:57:35 AM

It's also funny to see cory bash the shit out of the "tambourines, horns and slide guitar", only to find it mildly entertaining in its rare moments 3 paragraphs down. Make up your f*cking mind.

Cory_ 4/27/2007 11:26:16 AM

While the syntax might make it slightly ambiguous, what I'm saying there is that I occasionally find it interesting. It happens throughout the record and it only works about 5% of the time.

paralostodos~_ 4/27/2007 2:40:07 PM

cory's reviews are spot on 90% of the time so i'll let him off this once. i just hope it doesn't put people off checking the new ptw out

4/10_ 4/27/2007 6:34:26 PM

"While the syntax might make it slightly ambiguous, what I'm saying there is that I occasionally find it interesting. It happens throughout the record and it only works about 5% of the time." --- It probably took that gay 10 hours of staring into his c-m-drenched screen to come up with that response. 2 hours were spent looking up the definitions of "syntax" and "ambiguous" so he could look sophisticated and the last 8 hours were spent crying and jerking off.

All you little queerbaits bitchin' about some metalcore. Why don't you pull the rubber's out of your dirty asses and pick up the new Locust, hear 2007's real deal holyfield shit. Tell your moms if their not still sore between the thighs to hit my nextel up.

chrisd_ 4/28/2007 2:41:31 AM

this review is crap

wow_ 4/28/2007 1:49:02 PM

This is just the worst writing I've ever seen. The review holds weight like wet tissue paper.

thisaintsweettea_ 4/28/2007 6:35:34 PM

4? Apparently someone wanted something else and would accept nothing else. I could give a shit about their back catalog, this album on the other hand, is solid and very well written

neil_ 4/29/2007 12:52:45 AM

well, f*ck you cory. you only see the negative side of the records ALWAYS. try weighing things f*ckin wannabe-critic. or better yet, lambgoat would rather be late on reviews than updated with your shit motherf*cker die.

Dillon_ 4/30/2007 12:05:24 AM

everyone just hates on a band if they progress with their style. Cory you are truely and idiot. I'm willing to agree its not the best album ever but its a solid release. I bet you listened to this cd once and I bet anyhting you didn't even listen to all the songs.

Selvin_ 4/30/2007 6:50:17 PM

Time after time, Corey has written some of the shittiest reviews known to man.

Oswaldo Sanchez_ 5/1/2007 12:30:18 AM

This album is dog shit. Who is still an original member of this band? Whoever likes The Locust or this album needs an audiogram and a MRI because you probably have a tumor. f*ck Lambgoaters!!

eatacorpse_ 5/1/2007 2:29:56 PM

i think this was a decent cd, but it just doesn't compare to the power that the opposite of december and tears from the red had.

fk_ 5/1/2007 8:13:47 PM

there is nothing original or appealing about this album. one of the most boring bands i have ever had the disfortune of seeing/hearing in my whole god damned life.

ionesco_ 5/2/2007 4:37:11 AM

"If you're the type to ooh and aah at tambourines, horns and slide guitar in neo-hardcore songs, you're probably already eating this up." WTF dude, can u get more arrogant than that?? And the You Fail Me comment makes as much sense as Bush vetoing the latest law concerning redrawal from Irak. They matured and it's a very good thing they didn't rehash their "old" sound on this new one.

_atab_joey_bishop__ 5/2/2007 7:45:12 AM

Cory_ 5/2/2007 4:59:17 PM

All I've gathered from these comments is that PTW has a lot of ignorant douchebag fans that can't tell a good record from a bad one.

ionesco_ 5/3/2007 4:00:03 AM

De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum. @ Mr bishop: Yeah, f*ck you too

anonymous 5/3/2007 4:18:25 PM

Once "Prematurio El Baby" steals its entire concept from Cursive's Happy Hollow, I pretty much gave up all hope of this record going anywhere good. lack of tense agreement. -2

gglives_ 5/3/2007 6:23:16 PM

The greatest thing about anyone responding to an album review is the hypothetical downpour of bullshit raining onto the reviewer. The only thing I have seen in response to this article is what can only be interperated as illeterate spew from girl-jeans-wearing 14 year olds who only enjoy this record because they weren't old enough to appreciate Opposite of December when it was originally released, and a member from said band that is angry that he got a bad review when maybe he should consider th

whatthefuck_ 5/4/2007 6:53:06 AM

there is no one in poison the well by the name of dan.i highly doubt poison the well would care enough to actually come on here and defend themselves when this is the only bad review i have read for this album.once again there is no one in poison the well named DAN.

anon_ 5/5/2007 2:58:05 AM

If anything, I'd say they stole from Burst's "Origio". The final track on that one had the same metalcore-gone-western feel to it. And heck, there's some Cave-In style watery riffs on "Slow Good Morning". Can't say I hear much Converge, except the basic "all modern metalcore bands owe part of their sound to Converge" kinda thing. Either way, I like the new sound a lot. "Versions" is actually the first PtW that I've ever really liked and I'm glad they abandoned that bullshit boo-hoo emo attitu

Alexlg_ 5/6/2007 7:53:49 AM

it's a fair review. I agree that this album isn't getting much attention by the ones who appreciate really good music.

duh_ 5/12/2007 5:56:34 PM

4/10 is a joke. this album is well above par. it has classic ptw passion, while reaching a new layer in the band's ability and talent.

zombiesaretight_ 5/21/2007 12:23:19 PM

f*ck all you breakdown loving hardcore gays. just becasue this cd isnt about breakdowns for once. open your f*cking minds. its a great cd, poison the well changed their style but is still awsome. boohoo no shugga dun dun parts anymore. f*ck all you pussies and f*ck you cory your a f*cking idiot.

xshotgunseranadex_ 5/24/2007 6:26:13 AM

regardless of what everyone is saying on here, be it cory , a fan, or someone who hates this music. honestly there are hundreds of different genres of music out, country, rap, metal, emo, freestyle, punk, etc, etc. and its no ones place to say that any band or artist is good, nor bad. the reason there are hundreds of genres is because everyone has different opinions, and for those of you who argue and put everything down thats not cattle decapitation, your gay, and for those of you who put every

jordan_ 5/25/2007 10:21:27 PM

the review for this album as written by "cory" is a joke. none of the points made are valid just opionated in attempts of being funny. it's a shame that one of the best releases of the year has had 10k pageviews of a poorly written review. grow up. joke.

The Fucking Champ_ 6/21/2007 11:46:36 AM

Holy Shit, This cd is more queer than anything fall out boy has ever released. Good god this band went from decent to just laughable over such a long period of time. Only thing really kick ass about this band was how tight the drumming was on Opposite Of December. But god I've never heard anything so gay. This lead singer is so f*cking irritating. Cory man you were too easy on these guys, should've just slammed a 2 on 'em. They need a hint by now.

Lord Shredder_ 7/10/2007 7:23:17 PM

2/10... This CD is terrible. It sucks more than the previously release (which is a consistency of Poison The Well). The Opposite of December was pretty good, but more because of the drumming than anything else. When Hornbrook decided to forget how to play drums, the band lost everything. Poison The Well are seriously way overrated.

The Champ Returns_ 8/7/2007 11:39:49 AM

That is f*cking bizarre how he just started sounding like green day's drummer on speed. OFD had some of the tightest drumming ever heard. Oh wow this band is bad

FriedChikin_ 10/7/2007 2:55:29 PM

this record f*cking sucks. how can you gays even like it? no wonder theyve gone through so many member changes in the last few years, because they're trying to be something they're not. they should've stayed in the hardcore/metalcore/whatever genre where they are kings instead of trying to do something different and being scorned because of their new "music". I wonder if they notice at their shows the kids only mosh/sing/whatever to older songs.

13225_ 11/13/2007 10:11:08 PM

a f*ckign 4 out of 10? are you kidding me? did you even listen to this album? by fartheir most expansive, eclectic, well composed and creative record to date. sure i'll admit, it's not as emotion-based as their previous efforts and the hardcore elements have diminished but f*ck, these are jsut plain damn well-written songs. end. f*ck you and your shit review.

Duh_ 4/23/2008 5:47:56 PM

f*cking retarded. This album is genius. The Opposite of December is boring metalcore shit. I can't believe people still have good things to say about that album.

Travis_ 11/19/2008 10:41:27 AM

I really liked Versions. It was a big change from You Come Before You (which is still my favorite) but Versions really changed it up to an extent. I feel as if the band is happy with the fruits of their labor that it's all that matters.

Ramey_ 1/25/2009 3:55:05 AM

My God, this guy here's some drum rolls and some shouting and can only compare it to Last Light. That's the such an awful stereotype and shows how little you can distinguish in huge stylistic differences. The guitars on Letter Thing are way more progressive and technical than in Last Light. They maybe similar, but in no way can you say that it's a blatant rip off. I mean the drums rolls are played way more on the upbeat in Letter Thing, giving it a completely different feel. Go review some

Cory_ 8/1/2009 10:21:40 PM

I AM AN ULTRA HUGE gay

chris_ 3/9/2010 6:23:40 AM

With Versions, Poison The Well borrows most of their tricks from some of the most innovative acts of the last ten years and rolls them into one big, poorly-arranged mess of impersonal style and shitty lyrics. < HAHAHAHA best line from a review ever

anonymous 4/23/2010 10:26:29 PM

Album is not half as bad as all these lambgoat gays say it is. Actually really effective and refreshing.

PoolShark25 3/6/2013 11:10:03 PM

f*ck u jerks im sure some gay hiding behind their comp screen who wrote this review could do any better then PTW. maybe justin bieber or swiftard would be more to ur likings if u don't like real metal im sure thats why

PoolShark25 3/6/2013 11:23:36 PM

take this shit down u self righteous biast f*cks

anonymous 3/6/2013 11:54:12 PM

I have no problems with not liking the album or PTW in general, but this critic is just wrong. Saying the lyrics are bad just implies you dont understand them. You portrait your very subjectiv opinion instead of a real critique but you acted like you have. Maybe that's the reason i've never heard of this site.

anonymous 3/7/2013 1:04:36 AM

So what they've had 20 something band members...obviously passionate about making music and progressing in the name of PTW. f*ck your biased opinion and the horse you rode in on.

anonymous 3/7/2013 3:54:12 AM

You know, I didn't really care for Versions too much when it came out. But I just read this review (Poison the Well's Facebook page posted it) and thought to myself, "What? Poison the Well sounds NOTHING like Converge in ANY sense." But then, I listened to Last Light and Letter Thing back to back. WOW. They're almost the same f*cking song. That's just sad, and angers me.

anonymous 3/7/2013 10:35:37 AM

sorry i USE to like ptw, from day 1 not to mention. Ycby was a little iffy but I appreciated it for the most part. Things got weird, a bit awkward and went down hill fast after that album. With that said as harsh as this review was, I have to agree with it. Any person that is still a fan might bash my opinion but before you freak out remember...its an opinion.

anonymous 3/7/2013 2:37:19 PM

wow that is one obviously one side of the fence opinion.. poison the well started back in what 97?.. and never really followed any trends just set the bar for music of its own nature many years in advance.. they also put out several records over many years never rushing to the next just to make a buck.. ..

anonymous 3/7/2013 4:03:05 PM

That's pathetic c*nt. Go f*ck yourself. Poison the well is incredible. No one can ever match there style, the way they make music. People FEED off there music, you need to sit your ass down and listen closely mother f*cker. Who ever wrote this review can get there dck cut off and thrown into traffic on a busy freeway.

anonymous 3/11/2013 8:53:57 AM

I really enjoyed versions, in fact i'm a big fan of all their material from YCBY. You come before you is the peak of their musical creativity. Versions is much better after multiple listens but isn't memorable enough. A throw away album after a few months. Only album I listen to on a regular basis is YCBY. Such an under rated album YCBY is.
