When The Locust first appeared on the radar over ten years ago, their discordant brand of chaotic hardcore wasn't that far removed from the hardcore the members had previously played in acts like Swing Kids and Struggle. Over the years though, their increasingly abrasive and unpredictable direction has become as polarizing as their notorious antics, both on and off stage. It's been a rocky ride for fans of this band whose every move seems aimed at spiting the potential audiences they should be trying to win over. It should come as no surprise then that New Erections sounds relatively little like anything the band has released to date and, in fact, little like anything any band has released to date. Where Plagues Soundscapes was a near-perfect fully realized display of the band's spastic stylistic tendencies to that point, New Erections features some of the band's longest and most fully realized songs. The chaotic beginning of "Aotkpta" seems to be there to assure Locust fans that despite most of what is to follow, the band has not abandoned their musical past. Instead, they've found a way to move on into new, uncharted territory full of songs memorable for their developed content rather than their tone or technicality. Sure, there have been Locust songs here and there that have stood out thanks to keyboard parts or random lyrics, but New Erections builds on the stylistic divergence of 2005's Safety Second, Body Last EP and delivers the band's twisted version of hooks, riffs and breakdowns. The Locust have applied their deconstructionist methods to a more progressive definition of punk rock. Even the usually snotty Justin Pearson has scaled the attitude back a whole lot, making nearly every song seem more urgent and genuine than anything the band has previously released. It's also the Locust's third record with Alex Newport (At The Drive In, Nailbomb) at the helm, which provides a certain amount of continuity from their last few releases despite the musical divergences. What does any of this really mean to you, the music fan New Erections could be the creative leap you've been waiting to hear. It bridges the gap between punk, doom, electronic music and progressive song structures in much the way that Naked City bridged jazz and grindcore. It's the kind of record that's simply refreshing to listen to because each song succeeds in doing things the listener doesn't expect. The four and a half minute "Book of Bot" becomes a relatively epic climax for the album with its central guitar and percussion theme mutating a couple of times before its eerie, Italian horror movie score keyboards and digital static bring the album to a near complete stop. Never satisfied with leaving the listener somewhere predictable, the band throws in two final brief pieces, one that could've been on Plagues Soundscapes and another that bounces around like an evil carnival ride before finding its way to the disc's grinding finale. Bottom Line: New Erections is a great reminder to the music world why everyone cared about the Locust in the first place. Their music arose from the members' refusal to adhere to the status quo and in 2007, the band has reaffirmed their status as one of music's most unpredictable and innovative acts. What the album might lack in overall coherence, it more than makes up for with the strength of individual songs. If you respect artistic boldness and are willing to work a little harder than most to find value in music, you should be able to get into The Locust and New Erections ranks among their best work.

Hell_Yeah_ 4/20/2007 2:42:57 PM

who's on the lambgoat staff did this shit band suck to get an 8/10. This band is almost as annoying as their gay fans.

Cory_ 4/20/2007 2:56:25 PM

Wow. It appears that if someone screams on a CD, there will be people whom buy it. It also appears if "abstract" garbage like this keeps getting put out, Lambgoat reviewers will continue giving it undeservingly high scores. posted by ipoopedinyourcloset () on 3/29/2005 7:20:07 AM I liked this post from the last time a Locust album got reviewed here, so I decided to post it here.

Hi I love art school bullshit and love taking it in the ass

xtroyx_ 4/21/2007 1:13:51 AM

hah lambgoat the powerful! their reviews are objective and universal, rather than subjective and personal! all kneel before the almighty webpage! contrust an argument for yourselves as to why you like or dislike an album. i appretiate anyone's willingness to critque a piece of music. what should it matter that our subjective tastes differ? lambgoat and the reviewers are not to blame and would they dare say their preferences should be made universal. the world would be a pretty shitty place i

Cory _ 4/21/2007 1:43:17 AM

*Makes Snooty ass comment about above comment just to justify self as a prick*

pukeskywalker_ 4/21/2007 2:14:43 AM

lol at the easily trolled hardcore community it's sad the locust has to do so little to piss you retards off. this band is the Flipper of the new millenium

wigjam_ 4/21/2007 3:48:00 AM

anybody that listens to this crap and then acts uppity when other people say they don't like it is a supreme gay. stop trying to set yourselves aside by having a unique taste in crap music with a different sound

Moby_ 4/21/2007 8:16:37 AM

::puts on Flipper::

scotty_ 4/21/2007 11:59:31 AM

wont put my name_ 4/21/2007 9:02:29 PM

I agree with Cory very often and think he is a good reviewer. i would put my name but you'd all hate me. You know ehs right most of the time...

murph_ 4/21/2007 10:46:47 PM

nothing quite inspires troglodytic virulence like the Locust. this stuff is some of the most unique music i've ever heard. if you don't like it don't listen to it. you f*cking childish ingrates.

Alexander_ 4/22/2007 2:07:23 AM

Cory smokes meth and writes reviews. f*ck you.

omar bravo_ 4/22/2007 6:04:45 PM

I've never understood how people can actually like this band. The stuff is straight dog shit. How is this remotely music? You must be a f*cking moron to think these guys are talented. Talented in creating shit music and stealing stupid peoples money. -1/10

Anthony_ 4/23/2007 5:06:08 AM

This album is amazing. Anyone who says this album/band sucks is probably some 13 year old shmuck who listens to Panic! at the Disco because his girlfriend told him too. The Locust are one of the best bands we have among us in this shitty time for music. The Mars Volta is really good too. All the gay metal heads on here need to get laid for once instead of dissing albums that the shitty bands they listen to could never, ever write.

Meatspin_ 4/23/2007 8:38:04 AM

"Bottom Line: New Erections is a great reminder to the music world why everyone cared about the Locust in the first place." ...Uhhh...everyone? More like, pretentious gays too busy beating off to the sound of themselves giving their own opinon to realize they're jokes. This band is gay, Cory is gayer than 2 dudes sucking 7 dcks.

bearclawrawr_ 4/23/2007 9:55:33 AM

this band is only unique because nobody wants to play shit music

corylovesboner_ 4/23/2007 11:41:38 AM

locust...more like blowcust

Radish_ 4/24/2007 2:22:29 AM

do the people who read lambgoat like anything? this website went down the shitter.

Metal_mania_ 4/25/2007 12:20:49 AM

this band sucks dck

united_ninety_three_ 4/25/2007 10:24:47 PM

i was actually hoping to enjoy this based on cory stating "It bridges the gap between punk, doom, electronic music and progressive song structures in much the way that Naked City bridged jazz and grindcore." as i figured though, those words are false and it barely does this at all. new erections sounds just like every other terrible locust album. i've always been one who has considered you a good reviewer cory, even among the cory haters bandwagon...but jesus christ dude. this album is a f*cking

Cory_ 4/26/2007 6:08:13 AM

you shiteaters are just jelous that i get free cds from record labels aren't you? grow up motherf*ckers. it doesn't matter how shitty the cds that i get are. if i don't write a good review, they stop sending them, and soon our advertisers would do the same, and we couldn't get $$$. so shut the f*ck up, and don't listen to it. clicking the article is enough for us.

The Anaconda_ 4/28/2007 2:23:09 AM

All you little shiteatin' gays need to shut the f*ck up and realize The Locust is the only real shit you'll ever hear. but your still too busy jerkin' off over the new Killswitch engage album. So f*cking pathetic it's hysterically funny. Your just adding fuel to their fire. They've takin so much shit for so long and their still the best. Eat Shit Killswitch fans

badaxe_ 4/29/2007 7:41:24 PM

"grow up motherf*ckers. it doesn't matter how shitty the cds that i get are. if i don't write a good review, they stop sending them, and soon our advertisers would do the same, and we couldn't get $$$". So......basically you're telling us not to take any of your reviews seriously. You just a gave a piece of shit a good review because you had to. Man you're a pssy. Oh, and whoever said "troglodytic virulence" is a f*cking moron. How long have you been brainstorming over that one? Jag off

Cory_ 4/30/2007 11:03:03 AM

I'd like to point out that this wasn't me: you shiteaters are just jelous that i get free cds from record labels aren't you? grow up motherf*ckers. it doesn't matter how shitty the cds that i get are. if i don't write a good review, they stop sending them, and soon our advertisers would do the same, and we couldn't get $$$. so shut the f*ck up, and don't listen to it. clicking the article is enough for us.
