Mastodon may very well be the most important band in metal today. It's definitely what most critics would have us believe and it seems to be what the band themselves believe these days. I can't think of any other way to account for the kind of self-indulgence that plagues this record from beginning to end. Apparently they're even taking lessons in indulgence from album guests Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta) and Scott Kelly (Neurosis). From front to back, Mastodon's latest, Blood Mountain, is an alternating display of talent and ego and this time around, the band's lack of restraint and vocal juggling have sunk what could have otherwise been a great record. Since Mastodon themselves apparently have no interest in revisiting their most metal days of Remission and Lifesblood, it doesn't make much sense to compare this latest phase to that one. Instead, I'd rather focus on this record itself as well as the growth exhibited and unfortunate departures from 2004's Leviathan. With that album's release, Mastodon stepped out from under the extreme metal veil to reinvent themselves as a more rock-oriented act. With Blood Mountain, they've embraced prog in all its bloated glory and found a way to make it work on occassion. The opener "The Wolf Is Loose" might start off uncharacteristically thrashy for Mastodon, but once the cleaner vocals kick in, you get an idea of where the album might be going. The track is one of a few personal highlights for me personally, but feels almost like a copout in terms of the rest of the disc, something to placate the metal fans. A neat little bit of drumming kicks off "Crystal Skull" which features guest vocals from Neurosis' Scott Kelly. It's definitely got some decent riffing but at the end of the day, this song kinda just sounds like Mastodon ripping themselves off. It's a rehash of "Blood and Thunder" in a handful of ways and it doesn't really work here the way it did on Leviathan. "Sleeping Giant" is the beginning of the experimental side of things that dominates the rest of the album. Loads of clean guitar playing riffs that could've been lifted from Rush or Yes wind their way around until the song finally gets going after two minutes. They just won't let the songs get any amount of momentum though and after a couple of lines, the song dies down again. The vocal line also lacks any significant variation and the track just becomes a bore before it can really grab you. It even has some godawful spoken word bits. "Capillarian Crest" features some of the disc's most intricate riffing, which might be a bonus for some, but the song's obsession with its own technicality just becomes too much. Mastodon don't seem to care at all about writing a song so much as they do about cramming as many riffs, fills and parts into five minutes as possible. There's just a lot of bits and pieces without anything to hold them all together. Is it impressive to listen to at times Yes. Does it make a good record Hardly. This particular track also features the band's attempt to rip Mike Patton's vocal stylings. The vocal inconsistency is definitely one of Mastodon's biggest flaws at the moment. Every time someone sings on this record, it's a different voice and a different style. I know vocals have never been the band's strong point, but if they found a way to create a stronger vocal presence, it might keep these songs from falling off the deep end. The opening riff of "Circle of Cysquatch" (and in fact, most of the song) was one of the few moments that actually felt like the metal band that held so much promise five years ago. This is just a fun track that flows well and actually works right up until it hits a brick wall and a robot starts singing. Every time I heard this song, I seriously dug it right up to that point. The overdone vocal effect kicks in and the end of the song slows down and falls apart too. "Bladecatcher" should be entered into a contest for "Most Obnoxious Song of the Millenium," with its sissified intro riffs giving way to jarbled crap that sounds like the Tazmanian Devil being raped by a theremin. Then Bill Kelliher plays his scales for a while before the whole nightmare starts over again. If this is your idea of amazing music, I pity you. One of the few times that the whole new rock aesthetic works for Mastodon is during "Colony of the Birchmen" when Josh Homme guests and reminds us all what Neil Fallon's guest appearance on Leviathan did: Mastodon have no vocal identity. The song's not bad at all, but there's just no identifiable character to the vocals that makes them unique, interesting or even likable. The hooks of this track make it one of the more memorable songs on Blood Mountain, but once it ends, it's pretty much all downhill. Strip away the drumming and amped-up aggression and "Hunters of the Sky" is just a mediocre rock song posing as metal. "Hand of Stone" starts promisingly enough but slowly begins under its own weight. There's just too much happening to be cohesive and the metal chugging in the track's final seconds can't save it. The disc's last three tracks "This Mortal Soil," "Siberian Divide" and "Pendelous Skin" are among the most experimental and are honestly the point at which I would urge anyone still listening to press "stop." "This Mortal Soil" sounds like anything and everything from Faith No More to Dredg to Rush to Black Sabbath. It's a shitty genre-bender that drags on forever before a stock Mastodon riff at the three and a half minute mark sweeps in and tries to tie it all together. "Siberian Divide" brings back the crappy prog verse to heavy chorus motif that they established early on but this time with even more disatrous results as the riffs just beome, for the first time on Blood Mountain, basic. "Pendelous Skin" is the album-closing psychedelic ballad from hell. It's an intriguing departure for Mastodon, but it ends up as more of a failed experiment than a gutsy risk. One of the few areas in which Mastodon have been consistently impressive is the quality of their albums unrelated to music. The production on this disc is fantastic, as usual and the artwork is beautifully handled yet again. If only their music were as consistent, they'd be the saviours of metal that most major media outlets would have you think they are. One final note: The disc's "hidden track" manages to top even the most annoying portions of the record itself, presenting the listener with a faux fan letter from Josh Homme concerning his contributions to the record. Don't even bother fast-forwarding through the 17 minutes of dead space to get to it. It's not worth it. Bottom Line: I'm not prepared to write off Mastodon completely, but Blood Mountain is just lacking in the songwriting and vocals department. I understand that Mastodon's individual members are immensely talented but it has become increasingly rare that their talents all work together at the same points. This is the kind of album that only a musician could truly appreciate, both because of its musicianship and because of its lack of appeal to anyone looking for anything else in their music. Are Mastodon one of the most talented metal bands in the world Almost definitely. Does Blood Mountain showcase that talent in a digestable or even enjoyable way Rarely.

This review is not very objective - it's not secret that Cory doesn't like Mastodon. I think someone else should have done this review. This album deserves at least a 7 or 8.

This is the kind of album that only a musician could truly appreciate, too bad Cory isn't a musician.

good review. i agree that "bladecatcher" is a f*cking terrible song. they experimented with some really absurd shit on this album and most of the time they fall flat on their faces.

Solid review Cory, but it does come off very biased. While I would agree it's not a classic album in any regard, I would say it's an enjoyable listen compared to most stuff coming out right now.

XPoopX_ 10/9/2006 3:50:29 PM

This review is pretty spot on. By the third song, I am trying to find something else to listen to. The only time I've made it through the album from start to finish is when I had the volume barely audible.

Cainam_ 10/9/2006 4:08:02 PM

Funny, I don't agree with about 90% of the review. Personally, this is one of my favorite albums of the year till now and YES I've been listening to Mastodon for about 4 years now. Remission was brilliant, Leviathan was great but not as good as Remission, and Blood Mountain put them right on track imo.

Greg_ 10/9/2006 4:08:11 PM

I agree with most of this review though I would have given it perhaps a 7. Two of my differing points of view include- 1. the reference that 'Crystal Skull' comes off like 'Blood and Thunder'. I don't hear that really... however, if you were to say it comes off as more of an 'Iron Tusk' type of song with the single note riffing and being a little heavier than its surrounding songs, then I would agree. However, I must admit I like 'Crystal Skull' more than both aforementioned songs. I do agree t

jon_ 10/9/2006 5:26:17 PM

first off, the songwriting on this album is hands-down, the best theyve ever had, so the comment that this album lacks in songwriting is pure garbage. Secondly, the vocals on this album are more experimental and varied, and do not retain the one-dimensional screams of "remission" and "lifesblood"....and to some extent "leviathan". this is the most varied their vocal work has been and damn good if you ask me...just listen to "colony of birchmen" with josh homme on it. lastly, to call "this mor

GrindTylerCore_ 10/9/2006 5:40:08 PM

Lifesblood = Potential Remission = Potential Realized Leviathan = Perfection Blood Mountain = Slight step back, but still good. You have some valid complaints. I hate the vocal effects on the two tracks you mentioned. Sometimes they do veer off into strange directions that I wish they hadn't but the bulk of what is going on is still very good.

dante_ 10/9/2006 5:51:06 PM

thumbs up Cory. I can only agree with you on this one. You just forgot to mention that they're ripping Converge riffs at few occasions. I still like mastodon but this album bums me the f*ck out.

drewcifer_ 10/9/2006 6:50:38 PM

i just listened to this album for the first time in full today. it's impressive on a musicianship level but i do think that its kind of a weak effort altogether. i'd say in terms of a mastodon album it's definitely a 6/10 but in terms of anything else, probably a 7. maybe even an 8.

Quit bitching about these f*cking reviews. Mastodon has never written a good record since their inception. I have no idea how they got so huge nor do I really care that they are. This band is so mediocre when it comes to being the "most important band in metal today." The ELO had more balls than these jerks. Nothing more than trendy music for trendy pretentious jerks.

Mixhail_ 10/10/2006 1:55:47 AM

what the f*ck? "Sleeping Giant", "This Moral Soil" and "Siberian Divide" are all kick ass songs. But i guess being epic is frowned upon. this album gets an 8. The story behind the album and the artwork just make the cd all the more interesting and make up for the 4 shit songs on here (1. Bladecatcher then "Hunters of the Sky", "Hand of Stone" and IMO "the wolf is loose). I also think that if they used "Crystal Skull" as the opening track, this album would be way better. I have determined 7.5/10. Apparently I'm the only one who likes bladecatcher.. though I will say it is a very self indulgent song.. if I could do it, I totally would too. I'll agree that rambling "vocals" on the song are pretty lame though. As for the entire album... my least favorite mastodon, but still good.

Horrible review.. 9/10 for me, miles better than Leviathan, yet not good as Remission. Leviathan strayed into radio friendly tunes a bit, and turned me away. However there is nothing radio friendly about Blood Mountain and it's a much more technical and experimental album. I love the clean vocals and the guest appearance by Josh on track 7, almost a flawless victory.

I dug the hell out of Remission and Lifesblood, but Leviathan was hit or miss. Shitty vocals (they obviously just don't care) and too many wimpy songs that never went anywhere. Definitely had a few standout tracks... I begrudgingly bought this album and I have to say it is overindulgent shit. I get it. You guys can play your asses off. Stop wanking and write better songs.

fvckyouyoufvckingfvck_ 10/11/2006 4:59:40 PM

remission>everything else put out by mastodon. Oh yeah. Blood Mountain can go suck a bloody c-ck. 6/10 sounds right.

Cory Is mega fag_ 10/11/2006 5:01:48 PM

well man I don't even care about this album and cory loves big floppy dicks flappin all around his shower.

Criggily K_ 10/11/2006 6:03:55 PM

Go away, Cory. You shouldn't be doing metal reviews. This is metal and you are putting an emphasis on vocals! Apparently you don't get it.

chrisd_ 10/11/2006 6:50:32 PM

jesus christ you people are a bunch of f*cking whiners. you know what i do when i like an album and i see it gets a bad review? i go enjoy the album and don't care.

seppuku_ 10/11/2006 10:44:53 PM

Cory you are an idiot. 9/10

jeff_ 10/11/2006 11:49:18 PM

i've always enjoyed mastodon, never been the most enormious fan ever but i think they're very talented but this album feels a little contrived. It's like all the hype around them from hot topic got to their heads.

revspin_ 10/12/2006 5:17:13 AM

so basically, cory used 1000+ words to say that he is butthurt about mastadon not sounding like remission anymore.

clock_watch_ 10/12/2006 5:49:33 PM

id almsot say darkest hour is more talented

Fur_Beach_ 10/12/2006 9:50:18 PM

ebola_ 10/14/2006 8:38:14 AM

Ummmm...I disagree with this review completely. I think Blood Mountain deftly combines the fury of Remission with the technicality of Leviathan. ebola

Cory_ 10/14/2006 11:57:10 AM

HOLY SHIT. STOP THE PRESSES. Somebody disagrees with my review of Blood Mountain. I must just be wrong. I'll rewrite the whole thing to include everyone else's opinion but my own and then we'll repost it. Hey, how about from now on we just put up an album's name and then build the review entirely out of user comments! That'd be a great f*cking idea if I did any of this to please the few dozen people that can never wrap their heads around the fact that people have different tastes and opinions.

glenstein_ 10/15/2006 5:32:04 PM

HOLY SHIT. STOP THE PRESSES. A reviewer at Lambgoat's offers us all a trite and hollow defense about how we all want to suppress their opinion as if it has nothing to do with his shitty reivew. Seriously, you had to go all Pitchfork on us and knocks an incredible album from a solid band. Because, hey, it would be all predictable and normal to like it, and apparently there is something wrong with widespread consensus that a band is actually good. Get over yourself.

glenstein_ 10/15/2006 5:48:04 PM

*knock whatever

snails_ 10/18/2006 1:52:23 PM

too long no read too mastodon no care

chwabbles_ 10/18/2006 7:35:59 PM

total crap

Nick_ 10/20/2006 3:20:59 PM

whoever did this review is a gay.

f28r06a42n12k_ 10/21/2006 7:01:12 AM

This wasn't a review, it was just Cory talking shit on the entire cd.

death_ 11/10/2006 11:11:50 PM

your a f*cking idiot this cd smokes all the way through one of there smoothest and polished discs ever a definite best so far this year

Frank_ 11/20/2006 10:28:07 AM

Mastodons best shit was their 9 song demo, but that was back in 2000. The world should of already ended by now...

Corey_ 11/27/2006 7:55:44 AM

Anyone who gives Blood Mountain a 6 out of 10 deserves to be shot in the knees. Pompous jerk, lets see you play an instrument.

dirk_ 12/6/2006 10:35:51 PM

I see a few people do not know much about music so I will not even take their opinions into account, nor the reviewers, who cannot play an instrument. Very good band, very good album. You can see some of their very early work in here but they have expanded and created another amazing album. I would give it no less than an 8/10, just on sheer ability to play their instruments.

anonymous 12/8/2006 9:39:41 PM

The Mastodon Fan They've probably got a beard, they listen to mastadon, pelican, isis, other shitty bands named after animals, used to be into HC, bought the new slayer album (DUDE IT'S SO GOOD!!!) and have a band they tell you is influenced by slayer, but probably sounds like converge meets The Sword... definetly bought The Sword lp, like every Boris record, think Bathory is funny, have a "record collection" made up of releases on deathwish inc, southern lord, hydra head, and level plane, and

fgsgfdgfds_ 1/31/2007 5:07:21 PM

Electrickle_ 2/20/2007 5:13:01 PM

This is indeed their best album, I can understand why people don't like Mastodon, but to say this band sucks is beyond ignorant. Very few bands posess their kind of talent, and courage to give people something new. If they wanted to, they could have put out run of the mill thrash or metalcore album, and probably would have received praise for it. Mastodon is just Mastodon, take it or leave it, but don't expect them to start wearing girl pants, and play mosh breakdowns every 3 minutes. 10/10 for

Doug_ 8/16/2008 9:11:46 AM

I think this is an amazing album, 6/10 is a pathetic rating, and i disagree with almost all of this review, I'd say one of the best albums of 2006 easily

Tony W._ 9/16/2008 1:50:14 AM

This album put every other album, released that same year, to shame. Hands down.
