quite possibly the most over-rated band in a long time... rubbish 2/10
give it to even this website for jumping on the bandwago of not giving bands more credit as they get bigger. I know the gays on this website are f*cking retarded and do shit like that but I expected better from the website people.
This review is not very objective - it's not secret that Cory doesn't like Mastodon. I think someone else should have done this review. This album deserves at least a 7 or 8.
This is the kind of album that only a musician could truly appreciate, too bad Cory isn't a musician.
your a peace of shit and you have no idea what you say most of the time you think you are so smart but truthfullay you were dropped on yourhead as a child grow up you dont know anything and your life is a complete waste MASTODAN RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
OOOH, you don't like our music! boo f*cking hoo. Cry me a river fanboy. We have more talent in our little finger than you do in your whole body. What band do you play for tough guy? huh? probably some bull shit in flames rifoff. gays.
i hate when people say "oh its not cool to like mastodon anymore" or somthing. this record f*cking blows compared to their previous stuff. get over it. wahh wahhh someone disagrees with me. wahh wahhh
hey joe does ihatepickingusernames have a saggy vjayjay? she said you and your band mates each blew a few loads in her
Good album. Far from perfect but way better than a 6.
too much "push-mosh" for cory. What a c-ck wrangler. This guy hasn't written one good review.
good review. i agree that "bladecatcher" is a f*cking terrible song. they experimented with some really absurd shit on this album and most of the time they fall flat on their faces.
This review made me want to listen to this album, cheers! :D
i haven't even listened to it yet, but Cory is a boner
too mastodon, no care ever. also, tlnr.
Solid review Cory, but it does come off very biased. While I would agree it's not a classic album in any regard, I would say it's an enjoyable listen compared to most stuff coming out right now.
This is one of the best albums of the year in my opinion
um..i felt the same way at first. but then i got stoned, gave it another chance and now i cant stop listening. i love the multiple vocal styles and there are some really great riffs. definitely deserves a 7 at least.
This review is pretty spot on. By the third song, I am trying to find something else to listen to. The only time I've made it through the album from start to finish is when I had the volume barely audible.
a 6..dude just give up on reviewing shit please...a 6 haha...you will be the only reviewer in the world who would give this a 6
You laugh at me because I rate different I laugh at them cuz all rate the same.
Amen. Haha. Maybe I just love progressive shit too much but after Leviathan I was expecting the band to take this kind of turn. Quit kicking yourselves and knocking this stuff and go listen to your moshcore.
"The track is one of a few personal highlights for me personally"... LOL
I completely agree with your take on Capillarian Crest.
Funny, I don't agree with about 90% of the review. Personally, this is one of my favorite albums of the year till now and YES I've been listening to Mastodon for about 4 years now. Remission was brilliant, Leviathan was great but not as good as Remission, and Blood Mountain put them right on track imo.
I agree with most of this review though I would have given it perhaps a 7. Two of my differing points of view include- 1. the reference that 'Crystal Skull' comes off like 'Blood and Thunder'. I don't hear that really... however, if you were to say it comes off as more of an 'Iron Tusk' type of song with the single note riffing and being a little heavier than its surrounding songs, then I would agree. However, I must admit I like 'Crystal Skull' more than both aforementioned songs. I do agree t
haha let see terrorizer reviews or lambgoats...hmm tuff call..quit reviewing you f*cking moron
" "This Mortal Soil" sounds like anything and everything from Faith No More to Dredg to Rush to Black Sabbath. It's a shitty genre-bender that drags on forever before a stock Mastodon riff at the three and a half minute mark sweeps in and tries to tie it all together" <-- this dude obviously hates progressive music. Honestly, who would let a set your goals fan review a mastodon album? Total douche nozzle. LOL @ considering him as a source for reliable music criticism
I agree with this review. mastodon't
hahah, why does lg let corey review anything anymore? Every review he's ever done has failed, he has no taste in music, I would rather read what a block of wood has to say about records then this piece of shit.
great band, great cd, shit review, gay reviewer
first off, the songwriting on this album is hands-down, the best theyve ever had, so the comment that this album lacks in songwriting is pure garbage. Secondly, the vocals on this album are more experimental and varied, and do not retain the one-dimensional screams of "remission" and "lifesblood"....and to some extent "leviathan". this is the most varied their vocal work has been and damn good if you ask me...just listen to "colony of birchmen" with josh homme on it. lastly, to call "this mor
I hope this prog old school jam rock trend dies REALLY SOON.
Lifesblood = Potential Remission = Potential Realized Leviathan = Perfection Blood Mountain = Slight step back, but still good. You have some valid complaints. I hate the vocal effects on the two tracks you mentioned. Sometimes they do veer off into strange directions that I wish they hadn't but the bulk of what is going on is still very good.
i knew this was a cory review right away. youre allowed to have opinions, cory, but you cant keep subverting them by being an idiot.
thumbs up Cory. I can only agree with you on this one. You just forgot to mention that they're ripping Converge riffs at few occasions. I still like mastodon but this album bums me the f*ck out.
i just listened to this album for the first time in full today. it's impressive on a musicianship level but i do think that its kind of a weak effort altogether. i'd say in terms of a mastodon album it's definitely a 6/10 but in terms of anything else, probably a 7. maybe even an 8.
Attn: Cory WOW you are an idiot. Do the rest of the music community a favor and never do a single album review. Smoke weed!
Cory, smoke weed, then write a real review. Untill that time, quit writing worthless reviews. Yer ghey
jerk-ff review from a jerk-off who said that Reign In Blood was Slayer's best album. blah blah bliggidy blah. smoke another rock.
Cory, smoke weed, then write a real review. Untill that time, quit writing worthless reviews. Yer ghey
so many words...so much bullshit. this album is great. 8/10. cory thinks the new blood brothers is one of the best records of the year lol...so ya....nuff said
I have never felt the need to reply to any reviews here, but this guys objectivity needs to be called into question. Everyone of his points is tinged with an air of "this band sucks because they are popular," attitude. Get over yourself kid, if you were as smart as you think you are, you would writing for a real magazine and not a website.
Bladecatcher is indeed terrible but the first 5 songs are all great. They should have cut it down to 10 songs for a more solid release, but 6/10? This album is an 8.
I love this album. I disagree with this review. No biggie though.
I think Cory thrives on controversy. This album is so much better than 95% of the shit that's been released this year.
So sorry its not youth-crew hardcore or Belle and Sebastion you gay.
f*ck you my oppinion is right not yours! Ass!
this is an amazing album. I disagree with the review, but whatever.
this is NOT an amazing album. Overrated band.
jaded ... jaded hard core kid ... it says i have a degree in the first line of my bio ... major label? eww ... mosh mosh mosh yawn ... only musicians like music ... only english majors read english ... gay me in my gay hole ...
if this cd was released on any label, major or not, it would still f*cking suck and be disappointing. you people act like a 6 is a bad review. its above average, which is actually to nice for this shitty joke of a cd. remove your mouths from their c-cks plz.k.thx. and go read somthing on pitchfork if you want to see this shit cd get praised.
cory gives the new LoG an 8/10 and this a 6/10? This guy needs to remove all the tubesteak from his ears before hes allowed to review more music.
If this was the new "Achieve your dreams" cd Cory would give it a 9/10. Too bad it actually has talent
You're all a bunch of babies. Get the f*ck over it
you piece of crap cory, this album is a f*cking ten you douche bag.
this is probably a 7, not quite a 6. been listening to it quite a bit and it takes a bunch of listens. 100% agree with the criticisms of sleeping giant, and bladecatcher. awful tracks. not as good as remission or leviathan, but definitely it is a good album.
"Am I happy Beth left me? Of course not. Am I ready to move on? Absolutely!"
Quit bitching about these f*cking reviews. Mastodon has never written a good record since their inception. I have no idea how they got so huge nor do I really care that they are. This band is so mediocre when it comes to being the "most important band in metal today." The ELO had more balls than these jerks. Nothing more than trendy music for trendy pretentious jerks.
what the f*ck? "Sleeping Giant", "This Moral Soil" and "Siberian Divide" are all kick ass songs. But i guess being epic is frowned upon. this album gets an 8. The story behind the album and the artwork just make the cd all the more interesting and make up for the 4 shit songs on here (1. Bladecatcher then "Hunters of the Sky", "Hand of Stone" and IMO "the wolf is loose). I also think that if they used "Crystal Skull" as the opening track, this album would be way better. The intros to that and
I have determined 7.5/10. Apparently I'm the only one who likes bladecatcher.. though I will say it is a very self indulgent song.. if I could do it, I totally would too. I'll agree that rambling "vocals" on the song are pretty lame though. As for the entire album... my least favorite mastodon, but still good.
Cory is an idiot. Yeah, too much variety is bad!!! Metal needs to just be METAL or it sucks!!! This is one of the ONLY metal albums worth picking up this year so far. God forbid anyone do anything interesting in that scene. Jesus.
oh and p.s. the reason other reviews rate this album well is because they aren't IDIOTS. They are real critics who have some intelligence and realize that this is a worthwhile innovative and important release. THAT'S WHY THEY ALL RATE THE SAME. Your review was shit, you just whined the whole time. and to Mike who said he hopes this PROG thing goes away soon, let me just say... IT HASN'T EVEN BEGUN.
The last 3 records have been so boring. Overrated band.
cory, remember that thread you made about this album being the worst piece of shit you'd ever heard? and here you give it a 6. so why not give it a 2, or a 1?
I like how on one hand you knock them for not being metal enough and too "rock" and then on the other you complain that Capillarian Crest is too "tech." This coming from the guy who tried to call Bal-Sagoth as kvlt. What a chump. When you grow up you might be able to truly rearyze music, but for now you should stick to listening to your Hatebreed.
I told this forum back when MAST left relapse that this would not turn out well, so here we are, another talented band stepping off the ledge ..... you people sound surprised, its pathetic.
its really f*ckin pathetic how so many people are getting all worked up over a cd review, I think a lot of you need to find better things to do with your time than crying like a bitch because someone has a different opinion than you.
Corey knows this review doesn't matter, everyone's already decided whether or not they like this album, so he's decided to go out in a blaze of sour grapes. He's probably a terrible monday morning quarterback too.
I haven't disagreed with a LG review this much in a while. You jerk.
Horrible review.. 9/10 for me, miles better than Leviathan, yet not good as Remission. Leviathan strayed into radio friendly tunes a bit, and turned me away. However there is nothing radio friendly about Blood Mountain and it's a much more technical and experimental album. I love the clean vocals and the guest appearance by Josh on track 7, almost a flawless victory.
Another solid release from these guys. "Bladecatcher" is fun to watch them play live.
Great band and Great album. Cory is a f*cking gay.
I dug the hell out of Remission and Lifesblood, but Leviathan was hit or miss. Shitty vocals (they obviously just don't care) and too many wimpy songs that never went anywhere. Definitely had a few standout tracks... I begrudgingly bought this album and I have to say it is overindulgent shit. I get it. You guys can play your asses off. Stop wanking and write better songs.
different is good. who esle out there is doing what mastodon is doing? nobody. the vocals are all over the place, that is one of the best aspects of this record. who wants to hear the same vocals on every song. each track has its own voice and progression is the key. they are headed in the right direction. warner bros. is actually getting in to good/different music.
god cory is such a f*cking waste why do you continue to let him review albums that anyone besides 0.01% of the population might enjoy..... webby, i sense that you want your website to be successful, if so, maybe you want to have album reviewers that aren't complete retards plzktnx
I'm not that surprised at this rating; homeboy dogged Leviathan too.
a 6? what a f*cking joke. Mastodon takes shits cooler than you cory.
I get bored after the first couple of songs on this record. And it bothers me, caus I expected so much of it and instead got shit.. Every f*cking damn thing Mastodon has released prior to this album is world class, but this new one just blows. I sincerely hope the new Converge album won't fail
Uh-oh. Mastodon backlash times eleventy bajillion. Oh well, I liked it. It's not the sonic equivalent of the second coming of Christ like some of the reviews of this album would have you believe, but still pretty decent. I'd give it a 7.5 to an 8.
this record is great. open your ears retardz. 6/10 is a joke.
nearly 100 comments! Anyway, this is alright but their best work is remission. 6/10 I agree with.
i'd give it a 7, it's a solid album but not worthy of the dick riding everyones been giving them for it.
remission>everything else put out by mastodon. Oh yeah. Blood Mountain can go suck a bloody c-ck. 6/10 sounds right.
well man I don't even care about this album and cory loves big floppy dicks flappin all around his shower.
Go away, Cory. You shouldn't be doing metal reviews. This is metal and you are putting an emphasis on vocals! Apparently you don't get it.
jesus christ you people are a bunch of f*cking whiners. you know what i do when i like an album and i see it gets a bad review? i go enjoy the album and don't care.
i've always enjoyed mastodon, never been the most enormious fan ever but i think they're very talented but this album feels a little contrived. It's like all the hype around them from hot topic got to their heads.
so basically, cory used 1000+ words to say that he is butthurt about mastadon not sounding like remission anymore.
id almsot say darkest hour is more talented
Ummmm...I disagree with this review completely. I think Blood Mountain deftly combines the fury of Remission with the technicality of Leviathan. ebola
HOLY SHIT. STOP THE PRESSES. Somebody disagrees with my review of Blood Mountain. I must just be wrong. I'll rewrite the whole thing to include everyone else's opinion but my own and then we'll repost it. Hey, how about from now on we just put up an album's name and then build the review entirely out of user comments! That'd be a great f*cking idea if I did any of this to please the few dozen people that can never wrap their heads around the fact that people have different tastes and opinions.
HOLY SHIT. STOP THE PRESSES. A reviewer at Lambgoat's offers us all a trite and hollow defense about how we all want to suppress their opinion as if it has nothing to do with his shitty reivew. Seriously, you had to go all Pitchfork on us and knocks an incredible album from a solid band. Because, hey, it would be all predictable and normal to like it, and apparently there is something wrong with widespread consensus that a band is actually good. Get over yourself.
This wasn't a review, it was just Cory talking shit on the entire cd.
your a f*cking idiot this cd smokes all the way through one of there smoothest and polished discs ever a definite best so far this year
Mastodons best shit was their 9 song demo, but that was back in 2000. The world should of already ended by now...
Anyone who gives Blood Mountain a 6 out of 10 deserves to be shot in the knees. Pompous jerk, lets see you play an instrument.
I see a few people do not know much about music so I will not even take their opinions into account, nor the reviewers, who cannot play an instrument. Very good band, very good album. You can see some of their very early work in here but they have expanded and created another amazing album. I would give it no less than an 8/10, just on sheer ability to play their instruments.
The Mastodon Fan They've probably got a beard, they listen to mastadon, pelican, isis, other shitty bands named after animals, used to be into HC, bought the new slayer album (DUDE IT'S SO GOOD!!!) and have a band they tell you is influenced by slayer, but probably sounds like converge meets The Sword... definetly bought The Sword lp, like every Boris record, think Bathory is funny, have a "record collection" made up of releases on deathwish inc, southern lord, hydra head, and level plane, and
This is indeed their best album, I can understand why people don't like Mastodon, but to say this band sucks is beyond ignorant. Very few bands posess their kind of talent, and courage to give people something new. If they wanted to, they could have put out run of the mill thrash or metalcore album, and probably would have received praise for it. Mastodon is just Mastodon, take it or leave it, but don't expect them to start wearing girl pants, and play mosh breakdowns every 3 minutes. 10/10 for
I think this is an amazing album, 6/10 is a pathetic rating, and i disagree with almost all of this review, I'd say one of the best albums of 2006 easily
This album put every other album, released that same year, to shame. Hands down.
