I don't know where this band came from. I don't know what bands they used to be in, or if they've been into metal for long, or if they're just a bunch of metal, child-prodigies fresh out of high-school (actually, I've sort of ruled that one out). I've never heard of their label, and I've never heard a thing about Elizabethton, TN where these guys are from. But holy shit would I be pissed if I never got a chance to listen to The Showdown or A Chorus Of Obliteration. When I first visited my family back home for a week in December, I made sure to tell my kid brother about this band right off the bat, only to find that the record store he worked at already received a promo copy of this as well, and he was just as stoked about it as I was. Needless to say, this is a damn fine record, but you're probably asking "Who is this band and what makes them so great" And even if you're not, I don't give a shit, simply because this is way better than anything you may preconceive this as being. The Showdown are five guys from a state I've never care to visit, but their talent makes me wonder just how they got where they are today. Just before writing this, I decided to see if I could find some of their lyrics online, and came across a few reviews from some higher profile sites, and I was glad to see that staunch metal sites were giving this CD the time of day and were even rating it quite high. For one, this band is pretty straight-forward about their beliefs. While the lyrics seem to follow on the heels of power metal (and in fact, the layout and general theme to this album seems to be Sonata Arctica mixed with a bit of Southern metal flair), you can easily detect a strong Christian element running here. Add to that an incredibly clean (but not overly slick) production by Bruce Fitzhugh (vocalist for Living Sacrifice) and guest vocals by both Fitzburg and Josh Scogin (The Chariot), and this starts to seem like your average Solid State release. But this is anything but that. What's great about The Showdown is their ability to seamlessly mix American metal, Euro death and black metal, Southern rock, and hardcore/metalcore into one blend of fucking, all-out brutality. When I first played this, I thought (because of the clean vocals) "OK, that's nice - a version of Avenged Sevenfold where the members actually knows how to play their instruments," but after going from the opening breakdown track "A Monument Encased In Ash" to the rock and blues-influenced "From The Mouth of Gath Comes Terror," to the pure, death-assault of "Your Name Is Defeat," nothing comes off as overdone or underdone. The band has paid incredibly close detail to their songwriting, and as a result, each track is almost immaculate. Even the final, Jesus-laden acoustic/metal track the album concludes with is just too good to write off. The vocals have almost an absurd amount of range, from low-end growls to throaty screaming and singing, and guitarists Josh Childers and Travis Bailey play off each other to almost no end. This is truly an almost perfect release. I've played this thing countless times in a ton of different environments and in a vast variety of moods, and yet has it failed to disappoint. Bottom Line: Blast beats, death-metal breakdowns, rock and roll: it's all here courtesy of The Showdown and A Chorus Of Obliteration. Despite this band's appearance out of (seemingly) nowhere, this is a really solid release. It's catchy, it's rocking, and it's far from sophomoric. It has some minor flaws (the 'nice' singing can get on my nerves at times), but other than disparaging what this band stands for or their lack of a major connection to the hardcore and metal community (from what I can tell), I feel critics will have a hard time finding anything truly wrong with what this band has put out.

I'll just stick with Living Sacrifice, thanks.

bombs_away_ 3/16/2005 6:56:33 PM

they rock pretty hard.

Its Tragic_ 3/16/2005 7:33:54 PM

This band is stupid, god is stupid and whoever wrote this review is a jerk for saying this is good. Great they learned to play their instruments between going to youth group AND church and dipshit lessons. Doesnt mean its anything i want to hear. The only thing good here are the Pantera/BLS ish rock parts but they are still thrashing for god, so f*ck them.

james_ 3/16/2005 7:37:39 PM

haha my roommate from college is from that town, its such a shithole

Its Tagic_ 3/16/2005 7:41:18 PM

....even god hates them, thats why he gave one of the dudes "severe pneumonia".. for extra laughs look at their bio picture on their website. From L to R Sweet comb-over gay - Pedro, standing like that doesnt make you look tough - a mad TV version of John Tesh in the middle - nice gotee, now go cut your hair, gay - and the last guy just looks like someone they found to make the picture cemetrical.. i listened to EVERYTHING on Purevolume and f*ck there was nothing here i would ever E

you_in_hawk_country_now_ 3/16/2005 8:00:29 PM

haha you hate god so much it's laughable you stupid gay

xscottx_ 3/16/2005 8:57:47 PM

I love the ignorant comments, haha. If this band had nothing to do with religion, you people would probably be shitting yourselves.

xBrendanx_ 3/16/2005 9:01:48 PM

Waaaahhh waaahhhh, people have different beliefs than I do waaaaahhh waahhh. shut the f*ck up, these guys rule

buckwheat_ 3/16/2005 10:33:51 PM

This band is f*cking sweet. Anything Bruce Fitzhugh touches is sure to dominate.

tanner_ 3/17/2005 12:49:48 AM

i dont understand you people...so they believe in God...some people do, some people dont. some people worship satan, some worship God, some worship the damn flowers...whats the difference anyways they aren't making you believe in God. That's like hating a band because they like pizza and you dont...every unintelligently placed 'f*ck' in your comments makes you look ignorant and unlearned...next time you start getting pissed over something, make it tangible for all of the superior people who lea

bigscarymonster_ 3/17/2005 1:31:22 AM

I listened on Pure Volume. It's not that great. It's good enough, and all. I don't hate it, but I don't see the big deal. It's fine that they're christian, I like Living Sacrifice and have listened to some old Zao without puking, but this stuff doesn't do it for me. The clean singing is irritating, and the f*cker actually yelled "whoa, break it down" in a song. Yuck.

hxcobd_ 3/17/2005 2:44:48 AM

Solid band. Always have been. Good disc, too. A 9 is a bit high, but it is a good listen.

Zach_ 3/17/2005 3:21:56 AM

Holy crap. I can't believe this got a positive review. I love this band. But when I saw the review posted I was totally expecting a bashing. Seeing as how a lot of stuff that I like get's trashed on here. The Showdown is one of my favorite new bands.

dan_ 3/17/2005 3:26:44 AM

horrible band. not cuz they believe in god either

Vari_ 3/17/2005 6:43:55 AM

THE SHOWDOWN ON MTV'S PIMP MY RIDE 5 songs from The Showdown will be featured on MTV's Pimp My Ride with host Xzibit... Hehehehe.

dutchstep_ 3/17/2005 10:24:58 AM

hey, i'm a christian, but i seriously hate this CD. i bought used for like 5 bucks and i maybe listened to it once the whole way through. it just does nothing for me. i'll give it another spin, but i really think a 9/10 is absurd.

JF_ 3/17/2005 10:25:41 AM

This album is really good. Seeing them play the material live is even better. They're very tight with their instruments on stage and they give it a run. Great to see. The review is dead-on. If you don't agree, then you don't agree. Opinions are like buttholes; everyone's got one and everyone think theirs smells better than everyone else's.

Zach_ 3/17/2005 11:18:23 AM

I agree with JF: these guys are incredible live. If you don't think the cd is all that hot, then go see them play and see if you still think they suck. If you do, then at least you're open-minded and gave them a fair chance. But as for me, I love this cd and I think they are even better live. If you don't agree, then I guess your butthole smells better than mine.

arnold rimmer_ 3/17/2005 11:19:21 AM

The reviewer seems to have fallen victim to a newly mutated virus formally known as nu-metal now called fashionXcore. Hence the reason he was salivating at the mouth over this record. It blows, dont waste your money!

xscottx_ 3/17/2005 11:35:53 AM

I actually checked this band out after I posted. It's decent. I just loved how if this band had no set of beliefs or a moral standard, people (people being the ones that are ignorant and used the word "f*ck" repeatidly) would probably give this band more than the time of day, simply because Lambgoat gave it a 9 (which, if you look at the history, is up there with some really really good stuff.) I say congratualtions to this band. They've, apparently, got something good going for em. More power t

dutchstep_ 3/17/2005 11:40:46 AM

Zach, this is a CD review not a live review or an overall band appeal review. it doesn't matter if these guys are incredible live. this CD (CD, not band) does not deserve a 9. of course this is all my opinion, but you learn in basic journalism that if you put "in my opinion" or "i think" in your statement -- it weakens it. i'm not trying to be pushy, just trying to make my point clear.

xscottx_ 3/17/2005 11:48:30 AM

Word to the post above. Incorporating any kind of bias before hand or "These guys are really cool, but the production just doesn't sound alright", doesnt cut it. Theres a bunch of dudes in bands that I know that are real tight, but that doesn't mean they're the best band in the world.

omar the ass hammer_ 3/17/2005 1:41:56 PM

i liked this band better when they released that cd to hell with the devil. keith richards for president

False Hammer_ 3/17/2005 4:30:17 PM

My grandpa always tells me to never judge anything until you have tried it. For you that are so sure that God does not exist........or at least exist in Metal........well, listen up because this is Living Proof. Kick Ass Record !!

StinFox_ 3/17/2005 4:38:10 PM

The lord hath spoken to me in the mighty thump of double bass, the angelic sounds of a flying V peppere with pinch harmonics of the ages, and the thundering roar of double bass. Ahhh yes, I can now rest peacfully in eternity.

...._ 3/17/2005 5:40:59 PM

to the one idiot....what does "fashioncore" have to do with anything about this record, the review, or the reviewer? you're an idiot.

Eli_ 3/17/2005 10:47:15 PM

I really don't understand how this album could get a 9. I listened to them on Pure Volume a month or 2 ago and instantly forgot about them. After reading this review I went back to listen and they still did not impress me at all. I didn't hear any difference from the usual crappy generic metalcore bands. I'm gonna have to say that Jhonn's a little whack on this one.

buckwheat_ 3/18/2005 2:48:18 AM

oh yeah, it's Fitzhugh dude, not Fitzburg.

reid otto_ 3/18/2005 10:17:19 AM

brutallll tennessee metal. they are a young band and they are better than most metal these days.

Vorak_ 3/18/2005 1:16:27 PM

I've had this CD for while now. I first heard about them on The PRP's Band of the Month and fell in love right away. Excellent review Jhonn Thomassen, excellent review.

LifetoLifeless_ 3/18/2005 6:33:50 PM

Well, I liked the songs on purevolume, and I just ordered the CD. And to the haters, it's one thing to dislike a band's music because it doen't suit your tastes, but it's a completely different, and childish, thing to dislike them solely based on their beliefs. Like several others said, if they weren't an obviously Christian band, many of the haters would be jocking them like there's no tomorrow.

natas-101_ 3/18/2005 8:33:19 PM

First off I'd just like to point out that I think use of the word f*ck does not make you look ignorant, but use of the word gay does. Of all places to be an intolerant ass I wouldn't have expected it on a punk/hc/metal website. As far as this band (and other "christian bands ") are concerned, I don't usually like them because I feel like I'm listening to an ignorant person. This is the same reason I don't listen to straight edge bands (Karl comes to mind). I do like the few songs I've heard f

anonymous 3/18/2005 9:22:37 PM

music is subjective you f*cking idiots, a 9 of 10 to one person could be a 1 of 10 to another. he has a different opinion than you grow the f*ck up and stop bickering.

tony_ 3/18/2005 11:15:59 PM

i played a show with them and they were awsome doods. good band. funny doods.

Its Tragic_ 3/19/2005 12:05:11 AM

WAAA WAAA, i love god, FUUUCCCKKK. Shut up. This isnt good, god is not like pizza, because pizza is real. f*ck f*ck gay gay, you are more learned than me, gay gay. hows that? Band is still not good, if it was about how cool satan is it would still be bad music. There were 3 good christian bands, ever. Strongarm, Training for utopia and Cool Hand Luke.

Its Tragic_ 3/19/2005 12:14:50 AM

dude, i use gay like i use your momma, infact im going to say it now, "gay" is the new "Your Momma". I love dude on dude action, so get off the PC tip, and since it was said several times above, NO, i would NOT like this band EVER, regardless of the fact that they think the earth is roughly 6,000 years old and that man may possibly existed with dinosaurs, im glad this band is putting effort into writing bullshit music and not trying to get creationism taught in schools. You people act l

anonymous 3/19/2005 1:04:20 AM

"The best Christian band I've ever seen/heard was Traing For Utopia, we played with them in Topeka back in 97" No one gives a damn that you're shitty band played with Training For Utopia 8 years ago. Stop trying to brag, no one cares.

tourniquet4891_ 3/19/2005 11:40:39 AM

OH please give me a break people, you people whine worse than a bunch of little schools. The Showdown CD deserves this rating period. Second of all most of the Christian Hardcore/Metal Bands have been some of the best that I have heard even better than some of the secular bands. Quit your whining about it and get a life. In Matter of Fact give Jesus a chance. he will change your heart.

Vorak_ 3/19/2005 6:21:55 PM

Everybody has their own damn opinion and if you can't accept that then you're the ignorant person. This band chooses to write lyrics about what they believe in so let them do that. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it wrong. Just learn to deal with it.

anonymous 3/19/2005 7:06:53 PM

Jesus still loves you.

yeast infection_ 3/20/2005 1:04:59 PM

ok, i just purchased this last night because LG gave this a 9. I have NEVER been so disappointed. This album is pure cheez-wiz. He gave it a 9!!! that's it, i'm never purchasing an album strictly based on a LG review. please post an MP3 next time.

yeast infection_ 3/20/2005 1:06:53 PM

oh, and how in the hell did this get a higher rating than you 'album of the week'?! that makes no sense.

natas-101_ 3/21/2005 3:22:19 PM

Just to clarify, was not bragging, just giving an example, if I was bragging I would say the name of my band and I didn't, dumbf*ck. As far as being "PC" is concerned, I'm not, it's just f*cked up that there is an excessive amount of bigotry, no doubt spouted by ignorant little suburban high school kids that don't know any better, on a website devoted to a scene in which these things USED to not be tolerated, I guess hardcore really is dead isn't it? f*ckERS!

Joshdave_ 3/22/2005 4:46:07 PM

I think some people are mistaken in what this CD deals with. Ya shure it is about God but it deals with battels and awsome things of this nature. I mean honistly how can you get much more metal than a battle with swords. These dudes have worked hard and there Cd sounds great. You haters out there wouldnt know Southern Metal if it came up and bit you on the ass. GIT SNAKE BIT......... P.S. Our town might just be a shithole to people that are used to there flat busy city life, but I bet if you sp

Dustn Feltner_ 3/23/2005 10:52:14 AM

Ok, first of all The Showdown ownes. I've seen them live multiple times and they continue to blow my mind each and every time. I've seen the bands that they came from as well and I have to say they deserve each and every bit of apprasial they get.

David_ 3/23/2005 4:29:57 PM

f*ck U!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A7X IS THE BEST BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! im a big fan of the showdown.... BUT f*ck U!!!!!!!!

1bj_ 3/23/2005 9:54:59 PM

Epic: A Chorus of boliteration---now thats metal

Johnny_ 3/23/2005 10:33:48 PM

Wow. You kids really need to stop whining about whether God exists or not and focus on the album. The bottom line is this is a very talented band that can do all kinds of genres of metal. I've been hard pressed to listen to an album that is this diverse. Whether it deserves a 9 or not, I'm not sure, but at least agree that the band has talent and stop complaining that they mention God.

git snake bit_ 3/24/2005 1:42:51 AM

showdown is so awesome. those guys have been together for so long. i have seen them come along way. they deserve everything. they're such awesome guys. they are so amazing live and always have been from when they first started. in my personnal opinion they deserve the 9 on this cd. plus, this place is so great. yeah it may be a small town but there's nothin better than some good ol' southern rock.

Johnny Red_ 3/28/2005 12:59:59 AM

Anybody who knows anything about music, let alone metal, knows that this album owns. Anybody who listens to this album can't deny the sheer talent oozing from each member of the band. Granted, you might not like the album, but you have to respect it. Some of you people get to caught up in "genres", when the people actually writing the music don't give a crap about it. The Showdown just write the music they love, just like so many other successful bands do.

Johnny Red_ 3/28/2005 1:00:55 AM

GIT SNAKE BIT

anonymous 3/28/2005 9:58:20 AM

holy shit, there's a motherf*cking cow bell in track 9, no wonder it got a 9/10

J. Sullivan_ 4/1/2005 10:36:07 PM

I Got into Metal when I was 12.....I'm 28 now....I've heard a lot of Metal. This is bone crushing, face peeling Metal.....and I LOVE it!

JJ_ 4/8/2005 1:37:05 AM

This band is amazing. They are unique and blend genres of metal like no other band in recent years. I can't stop listening to it, every track is great. Pure death, to old school metal, to everything inbetween. 9/10 is right on, they are a breath of fresh air in a style that has become boring and repetitive. Finally just Metal, nothing more nothing less.

lover of God_ 4/18/2005 9:03:02 PM

The Showdown is better than any of you haters will be, so don't down them, besides they're my favorite band in the whole world.(P.S your foul language just shows that your not all that intelligent.)

Tony_ 4/30/2005 4:35:48 AM

These guys are amazing period. If you fail to hear that when you listen to them odds are you're deaf.

mickey _ 6/23/2005 11:41:37 AM

I cannot not believe this band! they burst out on the scene with with most well crafted, fastest, coolest, deadliest, and smothest record that obliterates all metal youve heard bbefore with the tightest musicianship ever! Buy It Now!

the warrior_ 7/28/2005 6:36:26 PM

bought the album based on the advertistufft in the latest issue of revolver. omfg! flawless. i'm currently trying to jam a sock in my cd player so that everytime i drive i can only listen to them on repeat. i think they could give darkest hour a good run for album of the year thus far. the one thing that does suck horribly is that i'm getting married the day they play my town. such audacity!

mike_ 8/28/2005 12:20:29 AM

this is the best album i have ever heard. i am in awe

Sean_ 12/14/2005 3:52:15 PM

my favorite metal band. musical arrangement is amazing. hands down

John_ 1/2/2006 6:58:04 PM
