As an admitted non-fan of this band's material, both as Norma Jean and in their previous incarnation (Luti-Kriss), it was with some hesitancy that I approached this album. After deciding to ignore the one-two punch of a stupid album title and the annoyingly gimmicky titles of the songs themselves, I pressed play on the CD player and let the band's music speak for itself, honestly hoping to be impressed with what came out. Unfortunately, the music spoke loudly, saying the same things over and over. And over. And over. For a band that frequently draws comparisons to some of the most innovative metal/hardcore bands of the last ten years (Botch, Converge, Zao) Norma Jean certainly seem uninterested in doing anything creative. Each song on O, God the Aftermath follows a formula so trite and repetetive that by the fourth track what could have been a decent listen becomes a painful one. The band has one tempo, two time signatures and three riffs, all of which were done better by Converge nearly ten years ago. This is the first outing for the band's new vocalist Cory Brandan. Much like the rest of the band, his performance here borders on competent but falls far short of inspiring. In addition, he is responsible for the disc's least bearable moments, the clean singing on tracks like "Liarsenic" and "Bayonetwork." On a more positive note, this disc is produced far more tolerably than the Chariot disc from former Norma Jean frontman Josh Scogin. Finally, lots of bands have gimmicky song titles and I, like most music fans, have come to terms with that, but Norma Jean are giving the Locust a run for their money here. The band chose to nonsensically link two words together by overlapping certain letters that both words shared. "Bayonetwork" and "Scientifiction" are two examples of this song-naming technique working out as the band intended. Maybe this is a stretch, but I think these song titles are indicative of the general malaise that infects Norma Jean's creative processes. Rather than trying their hardest to be genuinely creative, Norma Jean have latched onto one formula and one gimmick musically and decided to stick with it through thick and thin no matter how stale it becomes. Two of the song titles ("Charactarantula" and "Disconnecktie") don't even properly fit into the previously established pattern. Apparently even the band didn't care much about the gimmick. Bottom Line: How in God's name a band this mediocre has managed to sell more copies of this record than Botch probably sold of their entire catalog combined is beyond me. Elementary songwriting combined with stolen riffs rarely equates to anything good and Norma Jean is no exception.

pretty heavy for god-heads....it's too bad they haven't grown up, realize the church is fake brothas, everythings cool as long as you give give give to them, wtf?

i wasn't too happy with this CD. bless the martyr is 10x better....'sigh' norma jean is going down hill.

i don't like cory putman(their new lead singer) at all! he's a complete stage hog and does'nt live up to his other talents.he has draned the band of there energy that they had when josh scogin was there lead singer and has selfishly changed norma jeans sound to match that of his old band(eso charis r.i.p.),that he coud'nt keep together becuase he was always playing guest guitarist/drummer for other bands including Living Sacrifice (R.I.P.) or he just couldn't find a different tune to write lyric

you guys are nuts. The songwriting is so phenominal on this CD. Completely solid through and through. Very Botch-esque.

Yeah buddy, I really sure that this Cory fellow came in and forced Norma JEan to change their sound just for him. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

Dude, this cd is really good different from martyr, but good i do agree with the botch comment above, they do take alot from them this time around, but its a really good realease 8.5/10

Ohhhhhh_ 4/7/2005 9:46:08 PM

It's a good cd, however, I don't like the new vocalist either. His range is no where near as great as Scogin and in comparison for live shows. Norma Jean with Scogin is much, much, much better.

when josh was with norma jean a couple years back, nj was THE best band out there, no doubt about it. then brad came along, i could tell they started going downhill. but now, with this new stuff that theyve come out with, it just disappoints me. r.i.p. norma jean.. r.i.p.

this record is a complete, complete rip off of coalesce and botch. they couldn't think of anything original on thier own. very disapointing, you would think that they would do something different. it was different from bless the martyr..., but a comlete rip off of any coalesce and botch record. anyone could have put this record together. 1/10

I guess this represents the band pretty well.

XdavidX_ 4/18/2005 1:41:45 AM

I gotta admit that when I first listned to the album I liked it, then I realized I liked it simply because they were ripping of Botch so blatently. I'd defintiely have to agree that they've found one formula and are sticking to it which makes for a VERY boring album

dimmak_ 4/18/2005 1:44:55 AM

atreyu still beats them at sucking. they have a f*cking string quartet tribute now. someone please build a time machine and go back in time to beat them, hit up jesus while you are at it.

Chris_ 4/18/2005 2:10:39 AM

I agree with everything said. Especially the Botch related statements. But the truth is, metalcore is more popular now than it ever will be, that is the simple answer to why it is they sell more albums. I FOR ONE WILL NOT BE BUYING IT. -

J_ 4/18/2005 2:31:02 AM

I disagree that the riffs are "stolen" from Botch. There is a heavier Botch influence, which I thought many people would appreciate, but there is a lot of "Norma Jean" riffs on here mixed with said influence. The CD maintains NJ's overall sound from the previous effort, while adding more influences to their repertoir. Most all metal bands straight up STEAL riffs from slayer and at the gates; a lot of bands recycle riffs from generic hardcore bands. NJ is one of a comparatively small subset of

grantgoodmorrow_ 4/18/2005 3:18:49 AM

Considering how much I liked Bless the Martyr, I was pretty excited for this CD to come out, but I keep hearing some pretty bad stuff in spite of the solid sales. I don't know whether or not I should pick this one up, quite frankly. As Underoath showed with their latest album, changing singers can really screw things up and totally change the vibe of the band. But yeah, if you've got a bad opinion of a band that you're trying to review, it's pretty much going to be a bad review. Not exactly

666pack_ 4/18/2005 3:21:52 AM

666pack_ 4/18/2005 3:23:01 AM

anonymous 4/18/2005 3:28:48 AM

Sounds nothing like botch. Botch was actually good.

Tony_ 4/18/2005 5:07:58 AM

good review man. I agree fully that it's mind blowing this band sells so much, or any band like them. I guess using religion as a crutch for your music works to sell. I also think "hardcore" and metal have become way more popular though, and people don't give a f*ck about listening to the roots.

ihavegas_ 4/18/2005 6:08:49 AM

i see no real point to comparing Norma Jean now with Cory to..Norma Jean with Josh two different guys, two different sounds, Josh is out, move on with your lives he was good but hes not god . as for this review ...Cory(not from the band, the reviewer guys) is a good guy if he doesnt like norma jean its quite alright its an opinion, i personally think this may have deserved at least a 5 -6 for effort, they tried to change their sound again but to no real "New sound. sure they took a lot from Botc

even more than botch, it is a coalesce rip off too!!!!

BURZUM_ 4/18/2005 9:22:55 AM

I've heard probably 2 or 3 songs from this cd and i don't want to hear any more... i can't even tell the songs apart! I'm not a huge fan of these guys anyways, but the previous record is obviously better than this. but i guess "if you don't like it, don't f*cking listen to it!" give me coalesce or botch any day (as long as we're making comparisons no matter how close they are...)

Matt_ 4/18/2005 10:34:08 AM

This isn't the same band that a few years back was playing with thier guirtars at thier ankles at a korn-like state. They have matured quite a bit from those days. Musically, I think they have come a long way from Martyr even. I heard there was an interview somewhere with one of the members actually saying they went out to sound like botch. That's one of the big reasons they went to bayles. I thought this cd sounded pretty good. I still would listen to Throwing Myself over it, but it sounds pret

matt_ 4/18/2005 10:37:06 AM

Cory does make the point of it being repiticious. I listened to it a few times and I really can't tell the songs apart still, except for song 9 with the Evelynn breakdown at the end.

Fuck this review!_ 4/18/2005 11:25:27 AM

cleverguy_ 4/18/2005 11:36:09 AM

listen! I here something in the distance, its you trying to be clever. This record is balls. its as if they realized how ridiculous their last record sounded and tried to undo it with a different sound. how is it possible to not have a negative opinion about this band? kudos reviewer.

Natas-101_ 4/18/2005 11:45:10 AM

Solid review, my only problems are that you act surprised. This band sucks and is a ripoff, but if you are going to be down on them you need to be down on all the other trendy bands that all sound alike, which you do not. I don't disagree with this, just be equal. TFU is still the best christian band ever, and I hate christian bands.

"Christians! Put down the copy of 'We Are The Romans' and move away from the guitars!" Hahaha. So true...so true. Apparently they skipped over "Saint Matthew Returns to the Womb," for they would have learned the truth about their evangelical ways. I remember reading an interview with one of the members in Botch (right before they broke up) where he said they were calling it quits then so they could get out of the game before their style became contrived. At that point in time I couldn't gras

Matt_ 4/18/2005 2:46:23 PM

I personally loved this CD. Whatever your opinion of it is fine, as long as you're consistant. What I mean is how can you give this CD a 3 when you gave A Life Once Lost's CD "A Great Artist" a 7. I find that CD to be far more repetitive. It sounds like they just looped the drums for the whole disc.

gf_ 4/18/2005 3:16:57 PM

i downloaded this album just because of the battle going on here...and i have come to the conclusion that A.) im still not a norma jean fan and B.) this is way better than their last cd. 5 or 6/10 would have been better and from a journalistic stand point, Cory you shouldve never even reviewed this cd you f*ckin tool.

Brandon Konkle_ 4/18/2005 4:59:42 PM

I was very disappointed with this review. Where Norma Jean lacks in originality, they make up for it in precision and polish. This is a very tight and impressive record, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This cd is the best release this year & it better then half the shit u call good music. So what if they took from botch, or coalesce. Those r 2 great bands & if norma jean wants to follow that sound, More power to them. 10/10 bY Far for this album. As for you, I hope your computer explodes in your face

ihavegas_ 4/20/2005 6:36:54 AM

but then again a reviewer who loves norma jean would be too bias in one direction to, thats why you have your own opinions cory is a nice guy, if he doesnt like the album, then he doesnt like the album he can give it whatever score he wants for HIS opinion, shut up and move on with it already, you are an individual stop reading reviews and thinking you have to live your life by them... its HIS opinion not yours if you like the album give it your own score, dont come and complain about a review

edgehog_ 4/20/2005 9:53:37 AM

Christians! Put down the copy of 'We Are The Romans' and move away from the guitars! posted by The REAL Bob Rock () on 4/18/2005 6:40:39 AM LOLZ

fashioncorefags_ 4/20/2005 10:02:14 AM

i hate this band.

anonymous 4/20/2005 11:29:29 AM

nobody knows what "critical review" means.

funny_ 4/20/2005 1:25:11 PM

i love how kids are saying "this is the most biased review ever!" and then follow up with a shitty argument that can be chalked to nothing more than opinion. instead of saying this and then going off on how you think this record is awesome, come up with a better argument, because basically what you've done is what you've accused the dude who reviewed this record of doing.

Natas-101_ 4/20/2005 5:04:42 PM

I still don't understand how Zao and NJ have pages here but Training For Utopia doesn't. I know I say it a lot, but damn that was a bad ass band. Sure it was 7 years ago but that shit is still awesome, and I still can't stand christian bands.

ThousandBleedingStars_ 4/20/2005 5:39:51 PM

This cd is br00tal! I luv this cd as much as I luv Donnie Darko!!!

IHATEMALLCORE_ 4/20/2005 8:00:47 PM

seriously.....mallcore mania right here.... hate it so much

jerseyislame_ 4/20/2005 8:50:49 PM

brassknuxxx_ 4/22/2005 4:18:05 PM

0/10. Actually Ive never listened to this cd but I don't need to because this bands gay.

heather_ 4/22/2005 11:55:24 PM

I haven't even heard the album and I can already conclude that it's f*cking horrible. Sorry, but that band has always been stale, re-used material and they always will be. Yeah they have a listenable song here and there but so does f*cking Britney Spears.

joehardcore_ 4/23/2005 10:06:33 PM

norma jean was a gimmick who has run its course. never proficient in anything more then rehashed previously written riffs and being the flavor of the month. this record recieves no acclaim because is does nothing but grab for more of your dollars.

Toye_ 4/24/2005 4:23:00 PM

I was disappointed in this album, i looked forward to the album and was constantly reminded about it by the adds here on lambgoat...bummer it was'nt what i expected

mickeyoneill_ 4/25/2005 1:08:16 PM

stolen riffs?what the f*ck? pull your head out of your ass.

xdustinx_ 4/25/2005 1:37:12 PM

"We hung around with Botch and listened to Coalesce every day before we started writing the songs to this album" Yeah, the song writing is phenominal because they're ripped off phenominal bands left and right. f*ck, these guys were better as a nu-metal band.

wamucore_ 4/28/2005 5:55:52 PM

botch ripoff? sure seems like it. decent album? definately. gimmicky song titles? maybe. live show? fantastic. despite their apparent weaknesses, this album is fairly good. get it.

sipos_ 4/29/2005 12:32:10 AM

i use to like this band. but now i realize they suck. im done.

walnocerus_ 4/29/2005 1:05:20 AM

norma jean is for noobs. stop liking them!

fuck normajean_ 4/29/2005 6:54:19 AM

norma jean is f*cking gay. they suck. there a bunch of homos and so are there fans. this shit isnt art. this is little kid emo cry baby bullshit. it seems like anyone can start a band now. and to all those kids calling this hardcore.its not. if you want to hear hardcore you got to check out some one life crew, madball, terror, piece by piece, internal affairs. of course none of you pussies would be able to handle it cause they dont really write poetry, they talk about real shit. oh yea, did I men

sxecrackhead_ 4/30/2005 9:26:20 PM

what a perfect review for this shitty band and album

d peace_ 5/4/2005 3:37:04 PM

>>GOING DOWN__WITH THE SHIP< WITH THE SHIP!!!!! You are crazy if you think this album sucks. Check your speakers.

Ricky_ 5/12/2005 10:13:03 AM

You guys are really f*cking stupid. This CD is more technical and more creative than bless the martyr. ofcourse.. bless the martyr is an awesome CD, but why would you want a band to write the same shit over. were you expecting bless the martyr 2? You guys dont know alot about music. you dont understand that they are trying to expand their musical talent. Breakdowns might sound cool.. but where's the talent in a breakdown.. i cant play shit on guitar except breakdowns.. so thats pretty f*cking ea

michael_ 5/16/2005 1:11:12 AM

Anyone who thinks this cd isnt good obviously likes boys

jizz_ 5/19/2005 1:18:33 PM

This CD deserves a f*cking 1.

yeahdude_ 5/20/2005 11:39:15 AM

one life crew the white power band? YEAH DUDE. LET'S GO LISTEN TO SOME SKREWDRIVER WHILE WE'RE AT IT. p.s. madball sucks.

Ashley_ 6/1/2005 1:04:47 AM

This CD was very well written. They are excellent musicians, i'm sorry that half of you cannot see that, probably because you can't play anything yourselves. Also, people who think "church is fake" and christians need to "wise up", you need to get a grip. If you can't respect something then you have no right even giving an opinion. Nihilism is for the weak. These christian bands are 4 times more talented than any secular hardcore bands, handsdown.

david_ 6/7/2005 3:12:53 PM

whoever wrote that shit about norma jean can eat it. norma jean kicks ass!

Big Fat John_ 6/25/2005 9:55:08 AM

I find it amusing that almost all of the negative reviews are from individuals who already don't like the band, didn't listen to the CD, or have nothing more critical to say than "Norma Jean sucks balls" or "Norma Jean is a bunch of big dumb gay head poo brains". The irony is most of you are the so called "stupid people" you claim no nothing of music. Perhaps a good majority are pissed off that finally bands with Christian roots are getting respect for being as good as, if not better than some o

anonymous 9/5/2005 5:32:55 PM

This cd rules. What's wrong with you guys?! I'll admit that I liked Scogin better though. Check out the Chariot because that's his new band and they're awesome.

Buckaboo_ 10/16/2005 3:18:14 AM

I love Norma Jean, and Bless The Martyr... was one of the best metalcore CDs I had heard in a long time. When they lost their singer, Josh and decided to go on with another singer. I didn't mind this, I figured they'd still kick ass. Many people complain and blame the new singer for not liking this album. But I don't mind the new singer. The thing I don't like about this album is how bland and boring it is, atleast compared to their previous. I bet if they had spent a little more time growing or

jankyo_ 2/17/2006 7:18:46 PM

norma jean isnt as crappy as most of say

ktownhcore_ 4/5/2006 2:12:27 PM

Yes well i like josh as a singer i don like the new norma jean at all........and yes this c.d is more produced the the chariots first one that is the point josh wanted the chariots c.d to be raw....dont review a band you hate then you are bias!

Ben_ 6/13/2006 12:15:43 PM

bless the martyr is one of the 4 cds on the first page of my cd case. i have no idea where o god is, i only listen to it every once in a while, there is a few awsome breakdowns and the really long song is pretty sweet, but the new singer majorly sucks, and he is fat. burn this cd from someone, dont buy it.

cjb_ 7/12/2006 3:36:41 PM

man...this review sucked really bad. I would love to know what stolen riffs were in this album. There were'nt any...and two time signatures....dude, you really don't know a thing about music, if you think this is true. I study music, and when I have a hard time figuring out the complexity of some of there meters they are not of the ordinary. I did not really catch a formula for any of the songs except good song writting. If you think converge is better...I don't even know what to think. Cory's s

john_ 8/25/2006 12:01:29 PM

i remember i read a article about this cd and it said that the cd sounded a lot like botch's we are the romans, so after listening to botch for a while and when i got the new NJ cd, there really wasnt no difference, but i new NJ cd is nothing compared to botch

Mike_ 9/1/2006 2:28:28 AM

My favorite song is...Vendiahhrea: We couldn't think of real names for our songs.

matt_ 9/20/2006 6:34:10 PM

Cory, I agree with you completely. I was into this band back when they were luti-kriss and had an awesome work ethic, and put on a good metal show. Lustening to this album was a painful experience (I don't even want to listen to Redeemer). They basically went out of there way to sound exactly like botch, and if you listen to Weare the Romans, and then this cd back to back it is very easy to hear a few stolen riffs, and I think I read an interview somewhere with the bassist of Norma Jean that sai

anonymous 3/26/2012 10:31:51 AM

Disregarding anything according to the history of this band and line up.Norma jean demonstrates similarities of course, but for you to say this band follows a simple formula is inaccurate. According to the physical copy and music videos you will find quite a complex structure that bleeds into th music. After giving We are romans by Botch a listen. my perspective grew to see that NJ reinvented this crappy no seller with absolutely nothing memorable unlike O god the aftermath.
