BIOGRAPHICAL DATA: Conceived in 1988, New York's Biohazard were one of the originators of the rapcore sound (not the polished rapcore of today though), as it fused metalcore with the streetwise sensibilities of rap. Determined to rise above the violence and drugs in their surrounding neighborhoods, Biohazard set off to create a new and refreshing musical hybrid, drawing influences from Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Iron Maiden, The Ramones, Run DMC, and Bad Brains. The band began to attract a rabid following in New York, and released its first, self-titled, full-length in 1990. Biohazard's second full-length, "Urban Discipline," would be released by Roadrunner Records, and its sales would go on to top 200,000 units, as well as land the band's video on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. Mid-1990 would mark the band's move to Warner Brothers Records, where "State of the World Address" would be released. Two years later, "Mato Leao" ("to kill the lion"), was published, and in 1997, their first live disc, "No Holds Barred." Following the release, the band would move over to Mercury Records, and released its critically acclaimed, "New World Disorder," in 1999. At this time, Biohazard's relationship with Mercury Records would fall through, causing the band to fend for itself during its international tour. The band would soon find a new home with SPV/Steamhammer for Europe and Sanctuary for the rest of the world. The band's latest effort is "Uncivilization," which was slated for late-2001. Throughout Biohazard's long and turbulent career, the band has overcome many obstacles, while experiencing many successes, including working with Cypress Hill, Onyx, and a band member landing a roll on HBO's prison series, "Oz." Fans of NYC hardcore or rapcore should check out the one of the originators of both genres, Biohazard.
